What do you want to be when you grow up? Nuclear physicist? Diplomat? Physician?

Come on, you’re selling yourself short. Be Geocacher of the Month. 

Widely acknowledged as the most coveted title in the world (of geocaching), the Geocacher of the Month award is granted to one outstanding geocacher or geocaching team every month. The winner stands out as a pillar of support in their local community, and is an example to geocachers everywhere. Their contributions to geocaching run the gamut, from creating stunning caches to teaching Geocaching 101 classes to ‘caching newbies.

February’s three nominees for Geocacher of the Month could form the A-Team of geocaching. They are known by fellow geocachers in their communities as the best people to contact for geocaching advice…even if it means sacrificing a coveted FTF.

TexasWriter

This geocacher from — you guessed it — Texas, is always rushing out the door to be the FTF, but won’t hestitate to help out a fellow ‘cacher along the way. If you live within 50 miles of him, he’s probably at the top of your Phone-A-Friend list.

TexasWriter has more than 10,000 finds and over 350 hides. Keeping that many hides in order is a lot of work, but TexasWriter rises to the challenge. In January, geocachers celebrated TexasWriter’s streak of 1,0001 straight days of geocaching. The widely attended event was “a testament to the impact he has had on geocaching in SE Texas.”

 

 

 

 

Ramgab

This geocacher has found just about 58% of the geocaches in his country. That’s quite a feat when the total number of geocaches in Hungary around is over 6000.

As a cache owner, Ramgab takes the cake. His cache series “Rowing in Budapest” consists of eleven caches accessaible only by canoe or kayak, and has been awarded over 80 favorite points in total.

Ramgab has also helped organize multiple geocaching Mega events in Hungary. As a result, the Hungarian geocaching community has grown significantly over the last few years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TeamPommes

This German geocaching Team has amassed hundreds of favorite points for their creative gadget caches, tricky Mystery caches, and stunning cache locations like this one, which has been featured on the geocaching Instagram page. You’ll recognize a TeamPommes cache by their signature pommes frites (french fries) page background.

They are always more than willing to help out a geocacher with a tricky puzzle, or point them in the right direction while on the hunt.

The time has come. Earlier this month, three amazing geocaching teams were nominated for January 2015’s Geocacher of the Month award, and a winner has been chosen.

As a refresher, here are the nominees…

 

Timpat is known throughout the New York geocaching community for his impressive hides, supportive nature, and extensive GPS and mapping expertise. With nearly 10,000 finds and 400 hides, he is a true inspiration to all. Not to mention, his kayak geocaches are amazing.

family Behrens (aka FB) has helped geocaching bloom in South Africa. He (and his family) are known in the local geocaching community for their creative and challenging geocaches (all 88 of them) and for throwing well-organized, highly attended CITO events.

Koouye is recognized throughout the Belgium geocaching community for being a dynamic, passionate, and devoted geocacher. He is a social butterfly, known for hosting great events and for attending other’s events (133 so far!)

The Featured Geocacher of the Month is named by a panel at Geocaching HQ after reviewing community input and blog comments. It’s a tough decision, given the combined contributions of these folks to the geocaching community as a whole.

 

After tallying the sentiment and reading the comments, family Behrens has been officially named the Featured Geocacher of the Month for January 2015.

 

There’s no denying that family Behrens or “FB” is an unstoppable geocaching force in South Africa. Their father, Jamie, leads the pack with his creative geocache hides and wonderful community organized events. Many would say that their passion and excitement for the game has helped geocaching spread like wildfire in South Africa and surrounding countries.

Finding one of family Behrens’ geocaches is a must. According to the community, they are beyond good, they are legendary. SawaSawa says that Jamie of FB “has become renowned for his wonderful creative caches for which he has garnered numerous Favorite Points and heaps of praise. He has also invented an original ‘trademark’ micro-cache design (100% waterproof) made from discarded plastic bottle tops which I have copied and used in many of my hides in Kenya. His ingenuity in cache design and care in preparation is now legendary in South Africa and especially Cape Town and everyone looks forward eagerly to the next FB creation.”

If you’re in the area, you should attend an event thrown by this geocaching team. Andre & Jeanne says FB, “hosts numerous events and CITO’s. He works together with Table Mountain National Park to do path clearing and removal of alien vegetation.”

Suikerbossies sums up the winner perfectly, “We love their hides, their unique containers, enthusiasm for the game and trouble they go to to give back to the game, nature and the community! Simply put, they are a great example and we are proud of them.”

family Behrens will receive the very special Geocacher of the Month geocoin and a special prize package from Geocaching HQ, in recognition of their geocaching efforts.

Renmin says, “Impressively, he records tracks on his GPS as he travels unknown trails. He  converts them to a map file to share with others to use on their gps units. He also has supplied local preserves with trail maps of their land to which they use at the kiosks for any who hike them. Through his volunteer work in helping these preserves with better maps, he has been able to put a good face on the local geocaching community.”

 

 

family Behrens

Described as “the ultimate geocacher”, family Behrens (aka FB) has helped geocaching bloom in South Africa. He is known in the local geocaching community for his creative and challenging geocaches (all 88 of them) and for his well-organized, highly attended CITO events.

Earnst Gucken states, “In short “family Behrens” has become somewhat of a legend in our neck of the woods. family Behrens is always trying to encourage others to hide their own geocaches. He does this by leaving his micro trademark cache containers in other larger containers, with a note attached; urging others to take his container and place it. He even adds basic instructions to help a novice CO.”

 

 

Koouye

Koouye is recognized throughout the Belgium geocaching community for being a dynamic, passionate, and devoted geocacher. He is a social butterfly, known for hosting great events and for attending other’s events (133 so far!)  With over 7,000 geocaches and 161 hides, he is a geocaching pro.

According to TREGASTEL, “Koouye has an engaging personality. He does not hesitate to share his passion with new geocachers and give them valuable advice. Many creative geocaches were hidden by Koouye which has helped spearhead geocaching in the area.”

Geocachers of the world, earlier this month you read about the three outstanding geocaching teams nominated for December 2014’s Geocacher of the Month award. Spanning three countries and two continents, these folks are absolutely the cream of the geocaching crop…assuming there is such a thing.

And the nominees are…

 

Ralph en Thomas is a geocaching duo out of the Netherlands whose creative cache hides are piling up with favorite points and include everything from beautifully crafted trackable hotels to spine-chilling night-caches.

seastar255 is a husband-and-wife team known for their above-and-beyond CITO events on the Space Coast of Florida. Their works helps keep the geocaching game board (earth) a clean and healthy place for all.

Starkiller_ geocaches out of Ontario and is an all-around awesome guy. His monthly geocaching workshops help people advance their geocaching game, and his work with local municipalities and conservation authorities has brought geocaching to places where it might not have been otherwise.

Starkiller_’s contributions to his local geocaching community are well-established. Blort says, “Starkiller_ takes great effort to research local history to make interesting caches that teach and inform. He has a knack of finding information that often the people next door do not even know about their area. His CITO events are always well done, complete with a catered breakfast in the woods and lots of local politicians and VIP’s in attendance. Great press coverage follows that showcasing geocaching as a very positive hobby.”

adh-yow says, “Whether it was the canoe-borne adventure associated with North Cassel, the incredible creativity of The Rocky Road or the learning opportunities he’s offered through his many South Nation Conservation caches, his time and effort to promote caching in Eastern Ontario has touched many visitors to this part of Canada. Many thanks Starkiller – you exemplify what geocaching can – and should be!”

Did we mention that Starkiller_ hosts regular monthly workshops on different topics related to geocaching? If you’re in Eastern Ontario and you’re interesting in up-leveling your geocaching game, you’re probably going to want to find a seat at the table above. waxwing454 says, “Starkiller_ is a great geocaching friend and is always helpful as far as advice goes. He’s encouraged me to hold my own event which would never have happened without his support and encouragement. The monthly events which are held in small town in Eastern Ontario attracts ‘cachers from far and wide since they know that besides being able to enjoy a good meal with great caching company, will learn something valuable at the workshop.”

A few weeks ago we read about three geocachers who go above and beyond for their local geocaching community.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

HikingSeal, Mr Donut WP, and Team Geologynut are a trio of geocaching superheros spanning two continents. Their event caches, geocache series, and challenging puzzle caches are loved by all who encounter them. Best of all? These three are happy to lend a hand to folks who are new to the geocaching scene…you may have been one of those yourself once!

Each of the nominees is already a winner, with a prize package headed their way. But only one geocaching person, or couple, can be named the Geocacher of the Month. Before naming the Geocacher of the Month, Geocaching HQ  reviews community input and blog comments.

Of HikingSeal, one geocacher says:

“Hikingseal has my vote —- well rounded cacher doesnt even start to sum it up. I love all the ways she has inspired me to look at caching in a new way. I love the games within the games — from the challenges, to the hikes/ biking events, to interesting cache placements and CITO events she has covered a wide variety of what makes this game such a joy.” -Mzblubrd

Praise for Mr Donut WP:

“Mr Donut not only holds wonderful events where he always makes everyone feel very welcome but he has set some great caches, the Bike or Hike series being one series we are still enjoying trying to complete. “Team Geologynut has done wonderful things for the East Tennessee geocaching community. During a time when the area community was going through a transition, he stepped up to provide the leadership to keep things not just going, but thriving. His State Quarter series is entertaining and challenging to even seasoned cachers, and it ends with a special award. He has created several GeoArt series in the area that are quite popular. He has sponsored monthly Tennessee Valley Geocachers events for several years, which are well-attended by the TVG community. For several years he has been instrumental in organizing a TVG Cache Dash, a day of competitive caching with a Poker Run and a Trail Run. It would be difficult to imagine a geocache who has done more for his local community.” -PokerLuck

Although all three of these geocachers deserve accolades, there has to be one winner.

November’s Geocacher of the Month is one of the youngest we’ve had yet — but that’s all we’ll say about his age. His contributions to his local geocaching community in Northwest England are impressive for a geocacher of any number of years.

Congratulations Mr Donut WP!

 

With just over 2,100 finds, there’s no arguing that Mr Donut WP is already a force to be reckoned with in the UK geocaching community. But the username entered in all those logbooks isn’t the only imprint he’s made.

“My vote would be Mr Donut without a doubt. Like a DONUT, he is a real treat to the cachers in the UK. He certainly gets a ROUND and he puts his HOLE heart into geocaching. I have been given many stories about this young cacher for the UK geocaching magazine, he is spoken very highly of. Where most people his age are playing computer games hes is out there pushing old people about… Pushing them to enjoy more geocaching, to get more involved in the community and pushing himself to achieve more at same time.” -Adam Redschaw

Based on the comments we read, Mr Donut WP makes an impression on every geocacher he meets, even if it’s just once:

Mr Donut WP’s “Hike or Bike” series is a must-do if you’re in the area (and worth the trip if you’re not).  We think StridentUK says it all:

“Back when I started caching, just over a year ago now, Mr Donut was one of the first caching names that I started to recognise, thanks to his many interesting & well-thought out hides and fun series. His caches alone account for over 250 of my current total; that’s many days, if not weeks of caching time. Especially enjoyable was his mammoth Bike or Hike series which, over the course of the year it was released, took me all around the area I grew up in, to places I’d never ever been. A real lynchpin of the local caching community, organising many excellent events each year, Mr Donut’s enthusiasm and passion for caching and definitely make him worthy of the Cacher of the Month award.”
