Write a Comment – Nominees for the February Geocacher of the Month

The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin

The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin

It’s a month to celebrate the quiet geocacher, the geocacher whose kindness reaches people one-by-one. They’re the reason bonds form across town and across political barriers – because they let us follow them along when we’re new to geocaching, or offer us that gentle nudge closer to finding the geocache.

Each geocacher mentioned here is already a winner. They’ll receive a prize package from Geocaching HQ for their contributions to the global community.

Now, this is your opportunity to  help decide who will take home the earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin (at left). Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive the exclusive special edition Geocoin, a hat and a profile icon. They’ll also receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

MikeOtt – January Geocacher of the Month

In January,  Mike Ott was named the Geocacher of the Month.

A  geocacher who commented wrote, “He is not the reason I joined Geocaching but he is certainly one of the reasons I am still involved. He has taken a huge role in our state with organizing events and special caches. He has a unique way of finding the “right spot” for a cache. Always an educational experience in one way or another. Thanks. Mike for all you do for new cachers as well as veteran cachers!!.”

Now it’s your turn to help us select the next Geocacher of the Month. Write a supportive comment at the bottom of this blog for the nominated geocacher that you feel should be awarded the title. A panel from Geocaching HQ will then use your comments to help guide the decision of which geocacher is awarded the Geocacher of the Month honor.

Here are your nominees for the February 2014 Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Witch24 - Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Witch24 – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

I have nominated witch24 because she is my geocaching inspiration. She has placed many caches in my area and have enjoyed finding many of them. On the few of the caches that i have needed help on, nothing has been to much for her. She has also gave me many new cache ideas and introduced me to this amazing game, i am now getting a geocaching membership this Christmas.
Thank you for reading my nominee letter and I think that Witch24 is well worth of the prize.

Yours Sincerly, Alex Age 13

bjmccacher – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

I would like to nominate Brady, aka bjmccacher, as the Geocacher of the Month.

I first made Brady’s acquaintance in late 2013. I was driving from my home in Kansas to South Dakota, and stopped off along the way to find a few caches in Nebraska City, Neb. I found a few and DNF’d a few. Shortly after posting my DNFs, I received an email from bjmccacher. He very kindly inquired about my experience to both make sure the caches I had DNF’d were there, and also to provide a helpful nudge in the right direction. That was the first of many great experiences with Brady.

Several weeks after our email encounter, I visited Lincoln, Neb. (Brady’s hometown) to attend a lunch geo-event and do some caching. He ended up spending several hours… showing me some wonderful examples of great geocaches. I was blown away. But I later learned that my experience was similar to what many others have had with Brady. Just last month, he again spent a few hours taking me around Lincoln!

Since our first meeting, Brady has continued to be amazingly helpful and a great influence on my enjoyment of the hobby. He is kind and incredibly giving of his skills and knowledge. All in all, Brady Holmes is an example of the geocacher we should all aspire to be. To me, he’s a slam dunk as the Geocacher of the Month!

Sincerely,

Chris Ronan

Wee Willy - Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Wee Willy – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Wee Willy is a beloved geocacher, known all around north Texas for his love of hiking and finding places to hide geocaches, large and small but not nanos.  Although he is one of the most prolific cache-hiders in our area (current number of active geocaches 594), it is his heart for people that make him so special to geocachers.
Most who share a story about finding a Wee Willy cache describes a memorable geoadventure of a long walk in a park and the joy of discovering a cache large enough to put trackballs or fun swag.  Yes, we all grumble that Wee Willy takes us on trails that end up in some really uncomfortable place (itchy Cedar trees), but that doesn’t slow us down as we find his geocaches.  His reputation for responding quickly to a DNF or Needs Maintenance is legendary and sets a high standard for all to follow.  If every cache owner followed Wee Willy’s example, there would be no grumblers on Groundspeaks’ [Geocaching HQ's] forums. Finally, we appreciate Willy’s endless attention to new geocachers, inviting all to come and meet local cachers at events and welcoming all to SWAG.  Wee Willy is the best of geocaching!!

  • Jeff Tillett

Voting for Wee Willy! Nicest cacher I have ever met, and he doesn’t hit his number of caches with LPC’s, a wee willy is always bound to be a good find.

  • Cyn2

I’d have to go with Wee Willy. He and Hikeaday have proved to be tireless ambassadors for the sport here in North Texas. I remember meeting them at one of the very first events our family attended. They were so welcoming and we’ve enjoyed finding their caches – especially the dog-themed ones! – Cynsayshi of Team Klutz

  • Redd (ReddMetal)

Wee Willy is a true joy. Not only does he have hundreds of local caches and a where I go that he keeps maintained, he reads every log!! He makes certain he fills others local caches with pencils and goodies, not just his own. He sets tribute caches for the local cachers when they hit milestones and encourages us all. He has never met a stranger and when we first started caching he was the first to extend a helping paw. His owner HikeaDay and Driver are top notch. No wonder he turned out to be such a swell pup!

  • Steve Lovett

Wee Willy and Hikeaday get my vote. When we first started caching, we could not find a cache or two of his. He went out of his way to help us find the cache and he explained how the game meant to be played. He has done this for several new cachers and is always quick to help. He also maintains his caches better than most all hiders. One or two DNF’s and he is checking to see if the cache is there. Overall, he is one top notch cacher and a great ambassador for the game!

  • Cache On Wheels Geocaching

All the cachers sound reall great people, giving of their time freely, it’s great to read about them all – well done :)
After Careful consideration, my vote is going to Brady :)
I love this quote: “But I later learned that my experience was similar to what many others have had with Brady” It’s so wonderful that Brady goes the extra mile, bot only to help people with his caches, but helping to significantly improving peoples over all experience of caching and their holidays too :)
We had the honour of meeting cache owners ‘Die Helden’ on our holiday to Germany. They invited us to their home, took us round their caches via the best route. As i am a disabled cacher and was using my wheelchair, it made a huge difference to me to be able to know which order to do the caches in. We then enjoyed afternoon tea before grabbing a couple more caches and saying farewell.
The reason i mention my experience above is because when i read other peoples comments about their experiences with Brady, it reminded me of how extra special our day trip was, which added to the special memories of our holiday. It is fantastic that Brady is giving this amazing opportunity to other people :)
    To Brady,
Thank you for everything you do for the geocaching community, especially going beyond the call of duty to enhance peoples lives. This is from being pro active in contacting people who have DNFd a cache, giving them a helping hand, helping to encourage and other cachers in so many ways to giving freely and willingly of your time. It’s wonderful that you and your family meet up with other cachers, taking them caching and showing them around places where they can explore places they would likely miss out otherwise.
It’s brilliant how you and many other cachers are pro active in helping to enhance people experience of caching and their lives too! :)

  • Kawaiipanda325

Wee willy, he was the CO of the very first cache I found, he is so incredibly nice and he makes everyone feel welcome and is a great help and joy to all geocachers.

  • John Nevels II

Wee Willy gets our vote! He’s a wonderful and suitable mascot for the members of our local geocaching community and his ‘handlers’ and kind, generous and most-welcoming. All hail Wee Willy!

  • Zamsfamily

Wee Willy. A hard worker who is always willing to help. Always kind to anyone of any age that is new to caching or has been caching for years. Great quality caches too!!!!

  • Brian Bach

I vote for Wee Willy. He made a great impact into my caching adventure, I even found some of his priceless pathtags that he gently hide in his many caches. Always worth walking in his footsteps to find them. He does it for the comunity and not for himself. Beside his hides he is a skilled seeker with many finds and a nose for making friends ALL over the world! /levesund

  • Ninja R

Wee Willy. They don’t come much better than that thing.

  • Tim Cameron

+1 for Wee Willy! Not only is he a prolific hider of high quality caches, he is a great member of the caching community. He and Hikeaday (his owner) are GREAT envoys for new caching families. Wee Willy is highly deserving of this honor!

  • debrajean

My vote goes to bjmccacher! He’s the best. He’s a great friend to the geocaching world. His enthusiasm for the game is so contagious and while he talks the talk he also walks the walk. As long as I’ve known Brady, he has yet to leave a cacher behind. He’s a great pick for this honor.

  • Dave Sanderson

bjmccacher – I’ve known Brady for several years now and he is a great as a human being and as a geocacher. I know that he has helped me on a few caches and vice-versa. I read and hear all the time how Brady has helped others. He, along with others, put out a challenging Challenge trail north of his home and one day I’ll actually get to go grab them. Besides his Challenge trail, he also has quite a few difficult urban caches that are always entertaining, if not frustrating. He is worth of Geocacher of the Month!

  • Mr Cacher

Wee Willy gets my vote, has some really great hides and is an all around nice person to be with because of his love for the game.

  • Elaine Poe

Wee Willy puts out caches that will challenge you without beating you up. Wee Willy is the fellow who will go up to Each. And. Every. new geocacher who shows up at events, and introduce himself. Wee Willy has given more of himself for geocaching than any ten other geocachers you know. He is our favorite here in North Texas. Wee Willy for Geocacher of the Month!

  • starsharon

Bjmcacher has my vote. He definitely deserves it! He has gone out of his way and helped me in so many ways!

  • da_ewoks

I cast my vote for bjmccacher. He’s a great example of a great cacher, cache owner, and one of the best PaF/TaF to have in your back pocket. He is always willing to help. I’ve been lucky enough to have him around. He pushed me to finally complete my first and second fizzy. And keeps challenging me with his fun and crazy puzzles. He’s a great guy all around!

  • John E Cacher

I can’t say how much I enjoy finding caches that Wee Willy has hidden. He has to be the best cache owner in this part of the country with great hides and super cache maintenance. It is so much fun getting to his caches several of which have breathtaking views.

  • Todd Miller

I first met up with Brady(BJMCCACHER) several years back at a Neb. event. I think he would be an excellent candidate for COTM. When you meet Brady you immediately find yourself in good company. He is a very friendly guy. He works hard at promoting our sport wherever he goes. Several times when we were in his general area he would come out to meet us at a cache of his to discuss some geocaching or related topic. Also throughout the past several years whenever we needed some help he was only a phone call away with a nudge or two to get us back on track.
Brady also has a nice variety of caches to find. He has included a good assortment of cache sizes and styles. He seems to come up with new cache containers everytime we venture down to cache. I also believe you will get every D/T combo possible when you start finding his caches. And if you need a challenge, try some of his puzzle caches (I’m sure a few of my gray hairs have come from trying to solve some of those puzzles). So if you need a COTM then look no further than Bjmccacher.

  • Gregg Wallick

Bjmccacher gets my vote. He is always helpful to his fellow cachers. Last year myself and 2 other cachers were having problems with one of his level 5 difficulty caches. He stopped out to watch but also brought along the needed TOTT to make the find. He has also set up many events and nice trails around the Lincoln, NE area.

  • Monhina

My vote is for Wee Willy! Willy has hidden so many caches I just can’t count. 500? At least. He has some very clever hides, but also hides caches that are perfect for beginners, too. He is friendly to every cacher at each event and is always the first one to welcome and introduce newbies or cachers visiting from out of town.

He demonstrates what it means to be a responsible cacher and is a true ambassador for the sport in every sense of the word.

  • Fudgeman

bjmccacher gets my vote. When we travelled to Nebraska from the UK Brady was one of the cachers we contacted for suggestions on where to cache. He was very helpful and even suggested a couple of local events to go to. He sent several emails of caches to do in the lead up to our holiday and even offered to come caching with us. We got to do some of his caches during our stay and loved all of them even if some of his challenge caches were particularly challenging (I’m still trying to qualify for some of the challenges we signed and that’s 8 months later). We had a great time over there and even got to meet Brady at an event. We’re still in touch now and are looking to come back to the states soon. Hopefully we’ll get to go caching with him while we’re there.

  • MMCachers

I previously added a comment to another post, but it went through as a Guest comment. Since I’m not sure those get counted, I’m trying again :-) Brady (bjmccacher) is a great role model for other cachers because of his open welcome to new and old cachers and to visitors. He goes above and beyond in his efforts to expand membership in our game / sport. He makes himself available to anyone who wants help and joins them at sites where they need that help. bjmccacher is a prolific cache placer and has challenging trails and series. I fully support Brady’s nomination as cacher of the month!

  • Leigh Freeman

Bjmccacher. Brady was one of the first people I met when I started attending events, and I am glad I did. I have asked him a ton of questions, admired his coin collection, asked for help with puzzles, found his caches, goggled at the amount and variety of caches he has placed, and visited with his family, I think that is one of the best thing about Brady, he gives geocaching a sense of community.

  • arya52

Wee Willy sounds like an amazing guy! He should become Geocacher of the Month.

  • M Vanek

Bjmccacher gets my vote. Brady has done a lot of work to further what I what I believe are the best parts of geocaching. He places a wide range of caches for all skill levels. Everything from simple park-n-grabs to real head-scratchers that make even a seasoned geocacher stumble at times (myself included). Maintains his geocaches well (which are in the hundreds), and is more than happy to lend a hand to help maintain geocache hides from other cache owners if the need arises. Had a major role in creating the Husker Trail geo-art just south of Lincoln, NE, and creating the OCCT Challenge Trail (Oak Creek Trail near Valparaiso, NE). I’ve had several geocaching adventures with Brady and can honestly say the sport is better because of his involvement.

  • CMeCrochet

Wee Willy has placed so many caches for all of us to find. He and his
owners, Hikeaday and Mrs. Hideaday, promote the highest image of
geocachers. Not only do they hide caches, they also maintain them.
They waste no time getting out to check on their caches when someone
post a needs maintenance log. They also have over 1900 finds of their
own. They are always willing to help you out whether it’s finding their
caches or giving out advice to newbies. When you first find a Wee
Willy cache he will give you an “I found a Wee Willy cache” pathtag. He
also gives out other pathtags, 100 finds, 200 finds etc. He also
places a cache out in your honor as you reach certain milestones in
finding his caches. Come on down to Arlington and you will always be
greeted by their TEXAS size smiles. We love you Wee Willy!!

  • Jan Andersen Cobb

WeeWilly gets my vote! Between him, his Mom and HikeaDay you could not meet a nice group! WeeWilly is always concerned about the caching experience not just dropping a cache for the sake of hiding. He will also give you one of his old spots if you’d like to hide one there. WeeWilly is a great hider with excellent instincts and everyone who meets him loves him. I vote WEEWILLY!!

  • Jan Andersen Cobb

    Wee Willy

  • Scott Bishop

    Bjmccacher…”Go Brady, it’s your birthday..we gonna party like it’s your birthday…”

  • DaxVolks

Whether cachers are new to the game or just new to the area, when they ask, “Which caches should I seek?” we always answer, “Wee Willy’s!” Wee Willy embodies the spirit of geocaching. He is friendly, he welcomes all visitors to his caches and local events, he helps new cachers understand the game and meet local cachers, he maintains his caches. He likes children, so most of his caches are very child friendly (easy to reach; well stocked). He likes to walk every day, so most of his caches take the visitor on a wonderful stroll through the parks. Wee Willy gets our strongest endorsement for Cacher of the Month!

  • rabbithead

I love Brady’s caches, vote for bjmccacher all the way!

  • Bowhuntur(S&K)

We vote for Bjmccacher because he is an awesome cacher, friend, father and husband. He is an asset to the caching community. He is willing to help anybody on anything big or small and we think that he deserves to be cacher of the month. He has placed some very fun and family friendly hides at every level you would want and that is something that the caching community needs. He definitely deserves Cacher of the month.

  • Woodland Clan

BJMCacher – Brady is a fantastic ambassador for this hobby/sport and is active across the community in a variety of ways. He’s always willing to help and puts his best into all he does.

  • pattenclan

I am voting for bjmccacher because he is an awesome guy, as well as cacher. Though I don’t know him face to face (yet), I know him through geocaching. He is AWESOME at explaining various points as a CO that I may have not thought of…as well as giving a general pointers on how best to attack a cache from a cacher standpoint. His enthusiasm for the sport is always very present. I am VERY glad I have gotten to “know” him and glad he calls me a friend. :)

  • cubsfansean

I don’t know what else I can say about bjmccacher that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll just reiterate that he is a real asset to the caching community and is worthy of this honor!

  • Joe Gibbons

    bjmcacher for the win!

  • BTCOCachers

Not much more can be said that hasn’t already been said. It sounds like each person is worthy in their own right, but I’ve experienced bjmccacher and what’s being said is true. He goes above and beyond any other cacher we’ve ran across. He gets my vote.

  • Striza

    bjmccacher gets my vote!

  • Brad Walters

    My vote is for BJMCCACHER!!!!

  • Chunkymunky06

bjmccacher is one of my my own and by far a very worthy canidate for geocacher of the month. His contributions for this game have been incredible and he is very deserving of the recognition! – chunkymunky06

  • ernie66

My vote is bjmcacher. I enjoyed the caches he contributed to the OCCT challenge series near Lincoln, NE as well as several other of his caches, and he has found a few of mine, always writing a great log.

  • LantzAng

    bjmccacher is the man!

  • J+M

Bjmccacher is a great guy and a top notch geocacher. He gets my vote!

  • OneMoreSmith

Bjmccacher, Brady, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him while in Nebraska for a family reunion, we met out on the trails, friendly fun guy who understands what makes geocaching, geocaching…great people and fun caches. Win or lose this accolade, he’s still a great guy. Good luck to all the nominees. Cache on!

  • dougNKC

bjmccacher…heck even all of us in Kansas City adopted him into our Geocaching community!

  • Tom Hollman

I vote for Bjmccacher. He is a real inspiration to the caching community.

  • StealthRT

I must voice my support of bjmccacher. Bjmccacher is a true ambassador of the sport and I believe he is very deserving of the honor of geocacher of the month.

  • Victoria Nichols

I vote for Wee Willy. He has made me a much better cacher. His hides get you out and about and are always creative and fun. You often end up scratching your head and thinking “how did he find this place?” No LPC hides for him. You better be ready to get some exercise and enjoy the many parks in Arlington, TX if you want to go after his hides. He keeps track too, and has path tags to reward anyone who find at least 100 of his caches. He also does many tribute caches for others who have reached milestones. We love him!!

  • dawnandgary

Our vote is for bjmccacher! He is one of the kindest owners we know. We live one state over and have cached in his neck of the woods many times. He has always offered his assistance to us when we are coming. Whether it’s about lodging, transportation or a good old paf, Brady can always be counted on. We are proud to know him and his family and couldn’t ask for nicer friends! He is without question worthy of the title!
