The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin

The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin

It’s a month to celebrate the quiet geocacher, the geocacher whose kindness reaches people one-by-one. They’re the reason bonds form across town and across political barriers – because they let us follow them along when we’re new to geocaching, or offer us that gentle nudge closer to finding the geocache.

Each geocacher mentioned here is already a winner. They’ll receive a prize package from Geocaching HQ for their contributions to the global community.

Now, this is your opportunity to  help decide who will take home the earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin (at left). Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive the exclusive special edition Geocoin, a hat and a profile icon. They’ll also receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

MikeOtt – January Geocacher of the Month

In January,  Mike Ott was named the Geocacher of the Month.

A  geocacher who commented wrote, “He is not the reason I joined Geocaching but he is certainly one of the reasons I am still involved. He has taken a huge role in our state with organizing events and special caches. He has a unique way of finding the “right spot” for a cache. Always an educational experience in one way or another. Thanks. Mike for all you do for new cachers as well as veteran cachers!!.”

Now it’s your turn to help us select the next Geocacher of the Month. Write a supportive comment at the bottom of this blog for the nominated geocacher that you feel should be awarded the title. A panel from Geocaching HQ will then use your comments to help guide the decision of which geocacher is awarded the Geocacher of the Month honor.

Here are your nominees for the February 2014 Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Witch24 – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

I have nominated witch24 because she is my geocaching inspiration. She has placed many caches in my area and have enjoyed finding many of them. On the few of the caches that i have needed help on, nothing has been to much for her. She has also gave me many new cache ideas and introduced me to this amazing game, i am now getting a geocaching membership this Christmas.
Thank you for reading my nominee letter and I think that Witch24 is well worth of the prize.

Yours Sincerly, Alex Age 13

bjmccacher – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

I would like to nominate Brady, aka bjmccacher, as the Geocacher of the Month.

I first made Brady’s acquaintance in late 2013. I was driving from my home in Kansas to South Dakota, and stopped off along the way to find a few caches in Nebraska City, Neb. I found a few and DNF’d a few. Shortly after posting my DNFs, I received an email from bjmccacher. He very kindly inquired about my experience to both make sure the caches I had DNF’d were there, and also to provide a helpful nudge in the right direction. That was the first of many great experiences with Brady.

Several weeks after our email encounter, I visited Lincoln, Neb. (Brady’s hometown) to attend a lunch geo-event and do some caching. He ended up spending several hours… showing me some wonderful examples of great geocaches. I was blown away. But I later learned that my experience was similar to what many others have had with Brady. Just last month, he again spent a few hours taking me around Lincoln!

Since our first meeting, Brady has continued to be amazingly helpful and a great influence on my enjoyment of the hobby. He is kind and incredibly giving of his skills and knowledge. All in all, Brady Holmes is an example of the geocacher we should all aspire to be. To me, he’s a slam dunk as the Geocacher of the Month!

Sincerely,

Chris Ronan

Wee Willy - Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Wee Willy – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Wee Willy is a beloved geocacher, known all around north Texas for his love of hiking and finding places to hide geocaches, large and small but not nanos.  Although he is one of the most prolific cache-hiders in our area (current number of active geocaches 594), it is his heart for people that make him so special to geocachers.
Most who share a story about finding a Wee Willy cache describes a memorable geoadventure of a long walk in a park and the joy of discovering a cache large enough to put trackballs or fun swag.  Yes, we all grumble that Wee Willy takes us on trails that end up in some really uncomfortable place (itchy Cedar trees), but that doesn’t slow us down as we find his geocaches.  His reputation for responding quickly to a DNF or Needs Maintenance is legendary and sets a high standard for all to follow.  If every cache owner followed Wee Willy’s example, there would be no grumblers on Groundspeaks’ [Geocaching HQ's] forums. Finally, we appreciate Willy’s endless attention to new geocachers, inviting all to come and meet local cachers at events and welcoming all to SWAG.  Wee Willy is the best of geocaching!!

  • ex135nav

Wee Willy is likely the most beloved cacher in Texas (not just North Texas). Please everyone, honor him by selecting him as geocacher of the month.

  • Kittykatch

My vote will go to Wee Willy. He recently picked up one of my trackables from New Zealand which I followed up with an email thanking him for taking it to Texas. I was impressed by his friendliness and encouragement. Kittykatch, Canberra Australia

  • Natalie

I vote for bcmgcacher. He sounds like he loves geocaching and goes out of his way to help people enjoy this great sport/hobby.

  • Michael

bjmccacher is an amazing ambassador for our hobby here in the Midwest. While he lives in Nebraska, we’ve been fortunate to have him attend several of our events here in Kansas City. He’s always so friendly and encouraging. One of 3 wonderful nominees!

  • CaptainMath

My vote is for bjmccacher. Brady is a bundle of enthusiasm for the game of geocaching and especially for the most memorable of geocaching experiences that make the game great. He goes after geocaches that are challenging and fun, and he follows the golden rule of geocaching, hiding them like he likes others to place them. He’s willing to help those who go out of their way to visit his hides too. He’s an overall great guy who has made Nebraska a better place to geocache. He’s certainly worthy of my vote – bjmccacher for Geocacher of the Month!

  • Slocachers

Bjmccacher. Great ambassador, great cachet, and great hider!

  • AlphaDeltaIndigo

I vote for Calypso62. He is the chief at geocaching nsw.

  • Lou

I’m sure all the nominees are very worthy but I have to say that BJMccacher goes above and beyond as a cache owner, event planner and an all around great guy. He’ll help anyone, anytime and he has personally met our group of cachers in the field after we just couldn’t find his cache as he couldn’t stand the thought of us leaving with even one DNF. And BTW, it wouldn’t have to be his cache, he’d help with anyone’s cache. He’s always doing maintenance to keep his caches active and that’s no small feat with his number of hides. Quite simply, he’s the best!

  • Karen Peterson

Wee Willy ( owner of Hikaday and Mrs Hikaday) are the ambassadors of geocaching. There is always a huge smile and warm banter greeting new and old. He excels in quality and not quantity . Our little corner of the world wouldn’t be the same without them .

  • busterbabes

Bjmccacher is a stellar example of one who cares and goes above and beyond. I was in Lincoln last year, and I had a few DNFs on a few caches. I got an email in regards to one of the DNF’s, and then Brady was kind enough to meet up with me and make my short trip to Lincoln memorable. He truly cares about his hides, and he truly cares about out of town cachers having a good experioence on their visit. That is above and beyond what one expects while traveling. Thank you Brady, and you get my vote!

  • robinanddennis

Wee Willy! What Winstonsmom failed to mention is that Wee Willy is a canine cacher. He attends events when it’s not too hot or too cold, and puts many miles on his paws spreading his great hides all over North Texas. He’s a terrific ambassador for our sport!

  • IQandtheCrue

Bjmccacher, he caches, hides and helps like a boss!! Very courteous friendly and helpful. He and his cache buddies are the masterminds behind the GO HUSKERS! Trail southwest of Lincoln AND the OCCT Power trail that starts at Valparaiso, NE. He often organizes CITO events throughout the summer. His hides, ideas and attitude are one of the reasons Lincoln is one of the best caching areas in the country.

  • Lisdowney

We live in Ontario, and flew to Lincoln for the release of the challenge caches on the Occt Trail in Dec 2012. Brady (bmjccacher) picked us up at the airport, and shuttled us and other cachers around all weekend. It was by far one of our best weekends of caching, and it was entirely due to the efforts of Brady. The caches that Brady published were outstanding, and it was a weekend we’ll always treasure. Brady is our choice for “geocacher of the month”.

  • OrigamiFolder

All the nominees sound like great ambassadors for this hobby we love so dearly. My vote however would have to be for bjmccacher. I have had the good fortune of crossing paths with Brady at a few events and he is always so passionate about Geocaching. I love discussing cache ideas I have with him as his in-depth knowledge allows me great insight and furthers the concept into something truly grand.

As for his caches there is no shortage of creative ingenuity and fantastic new mechanisms associated with his placements. There is no doubt as to the level of detail and quality that proves he goes the extra mile to make your experience memorable.

As others have said Brady is as compassionate and helpful as they come. Despite his prolific cache placement he is always ready to help a cacher out and has on several occasions dropped what he’s doing to come to a cachers aid.

In my opinion Brady has all the qualities to make him the Geocacher of the Month!

  • Barb Berry

Bjmccacher gets my vote! This guy rocks as an Ambassador for Geocaching. He makes himself available whenever and wherever someone needs him out on the caching trail. He’s always a phone call away if you need a nudge in the right direction. I love caching in Nebraska because of bjmccacher! He has many great hides and always maintains them. I consider Brady a top-notch cacher, cache owner and cacher’s friend!

  • Ian Giles

    Bjmccacher. gets my vote!

  • Dave

Bjmcacher is asset to the caching community. Caching wouldn’t be the same without his contributions.

  • Anne Baden

Bjmccacher gets my vote too. He makes the most challenging puzzles and is willing to guide you to the solution. Cab68370.

  • Deb

Brady hands down! My sister and I cache in the Lincoln area as we are from around there. When we see that it is a hide from Bjmccacher, its “oh my, it’s gonna be a good one.” We have gone to several of his events with in the last year and always have a great time. And learn lots from him. Bjmccacher gets my vote.

  • Jackpine-Savage

Bjmccacher!! Brady is very interested in each cacher getting the most of
his/her experience. He places a variety of types, as well as, a variety
of D/T ratings. There is always something for everyone. If you get
stuck on one of his puzzles, he gives little nudges to keep you working
in the right direction. We had the pleasure of caching in his hometown
and his enthusiasm and encouragement was awesome. He even sent us a few
text messages to ask how we were doing. At the end of the day we shared a
meal with his family before going out, after dark, for a few of his
special caches. We enjoyed the tour and marveled at his creativity.
Brady is the kind of cacher we all should aim to be. Top notch!!

  • Jordan Judt

Bjmccacher definitely gets my vote. He’s a great friend of ours and a wonderful influence to the caching world.

  • Wall–E

Bjmccacher is a great cacher as well as an ambassador to this crazy hobby we all love so dearly. He is always willing to go the distance to provide assistance to anyone needing it. He’s a true example of the spirit of geocaching.

  • gemini76

I’d have to go with bjmccacher, it sounds like he goes above and beyond to help seekers when needed.

  • James Hyman

I’d have to go with bjmccacher, it sounds like he goes above and beyond to help seekers when needed.

  • Larry Butler

bjmccacher he brings Caching to the next level.

  • GeoJudt

    I can’t say much more that hasn’t already been said. Without a doubt . . . bjmccacher!

  • Jennifer

Bjmccacher is the most generous cacher you will ever find! His enthusiasm for geocaching is extremely contagious. I first met bjmccacher when he traveled down to Kansas City for some challenging caching fun. Since then I have met up with him many times all across the midwest, because he’s that much fun to be around. When I traveled up to Lincoln with ksumom2004 for a weekend of caching events he generously spent just about the whole weekend caching with us making sure we were able to make it to the top notch caches in the area and had the TOTT we needed to make the find. He continuously raises the caching bar and tries to challenge all of us. I appreciate his contribution to our geocaching community!

  • Nadja Yu

Bjmcacher is asset to the caching community. Caching wouldn’t be the same without his contributions.

  • Darcey

BJMCCACHER your geocacher of the month material. Voting for you Mr. Congrats to all nominees…your all worthy and deserve it.

  • Pam Holmes

I know how much time and work Brady devotes to geocaching. He is a great ambassador for this endeavor and a good friend to all, going out of his way to help anyone who asks. I love this guy like a son–in fact–HE IS!!

  • JCFinder

    bjmccacher!! Go get em!!

  • ithink314

I would like to submit my vote for Brady, aka bjmccacher, as the Geocacher of the Month.

  • Twofingersdown

My vote is for BJMcCacher. He is the one that got me started caching and we have been great friends ever since.

  • Jess J

Bjmccacher for sure! Awesome, creative and challenging hides and all-around good guy! :) JJ/loverfishy

  • whiller

My vote would go to bjmccacher. I was not very familiar with geocaching until Brady educated me! He is a fantastic ambassador for the hobby and takes pride and enjoyment from caching. He gives a good name to caching and spreads the word far and wide!

  • Steve Martin

bmjccacher gets my vote! I met Brady at the OCCT opening events on 12-1-12. He was instrumental in making that happen for geocachers who groove on challenge and other complex caches. Since then he’s always made himself available to answer questions and assist me and other cachers, and is a great “go-to” person for assistance and for knowledge sharing. He represents all that’s so good for our hobby/avocation, and is highly deserving of this recognition!

  • kathy tuschhoff

bjmccacher is hands down one of the most giving cachers I have encountered, we met up at an event in Topeka KS, he casually mentioned he had hidden “a few” caches up around Lincoln NE and that if we ever found ourselves up that way to give him a call. Couple months later we were in the area and started finding a few of his caches. After submitting our logs from the field he started texting to ask about the condition of this or that cache, just in case he needed to run out to do maintenance, with over 200 caches hidden he is on top of his hides. All it takes is a call or a mention on the Kansas City facebook page (which he is a member of) to let him know you are headed his way and if he can’t meet you to go caching with you he makes sure you have his number so you can call or text if you have any questions. Great guy, great cacher, Brady is a blast to go caching with too, he has a sense of adventure when it comes to caching, hiding and finding them. Not knowing the other nominees i am sure they are worthy as well but my vote is for bjmccacher.

Bjmccacher. However, I am not placing my vote for him because of my experiences with him, even though I have many as he is a great friend, but I think he is worthy because of how much he helps others. He really bends over backwards for anyone that is coming to the area to geocache. I have seen him go all day, sun-up to sun-down escorting visitors all around the area to make people’s visit as good as it can be. Several times he finishes his day worn out from going all day and hiking for miles without being able to claim a single find for himself. I know he has visited some caches several times, just to keep people company if they would like it. Brady is constantly working on new ideas striving to keep this game challenging and fun. He has shuttled people all over the countryside, to and from the airport. delivered and picked up bikes, and anything else he could do to help out cachers. And he never asks for anything in return. His whole goal is simply for people to enjoy their time here. There are many people that may be worthy of “geocacher of the month”, but for me Brady is at the top of the list.

  • Mrs wwdig

Bjmccacher and his partner in crime twofingersdown are utterly, completely and totally to blame for feeding my husband’s obsession! Brady doesnt cache for fun, its his life and his passion and he takes it upon himself to make sure everyone whether local or from afar has the best caching experience possible while in our neck of the woods! And sometimes he even makes sure to get my hubby and his friends home in time for supper! My vote is for Brady! :)

  • Colorado_artist RMD DGS

Bjmccacher is my brother in arms, and he gets my vote.

  • Mike H

bjmccacher gets my vote. He is helping me to get started geocaching.

  • Hill Folk

Bjmccacher gets our vote. He is geocaching family from Nebraska. Looking forward to meeting up with him and find his unique caches.

  • mitchell769

    Bjmccacher gets my vote !

  • StinkyMillers

Bjmccacher has been a great geocaching collaborator and really helped raise the bar for geocaching in Lincoln, NE (and in the central US)! Many of his creative ideas have led to outstanding geocaching trails and series attracting folks from all over North America (see the numerous posts below). He is also incredibly inventive and is always coming up with new and interesting ways to geocache–it’s no surprise that many of his geocaches are some of the most favorited caches in Nebraska. Finally, as a host and ambassador to visiting geocachers, he is simply incredible. He goes the extra mile in every possible way!

  • John Muehlbauer

    bjmccacher for the win!

  • Gary Sikma

There have been a number of times when I have travelled from South Dakota to Eastern Nebraska for caching trips. Without a doubt, Brady (Bjmccacher) has been a great host and a trusted resource. He is super about maintaining his caches as well as creating some very creative (and worth the drive) caches. Cache on Brady!

  • J&LA Geocats

Our vote is for bjmccacher as well. 1st time we both met him, he came out to meet us at one of his hides at 830 in the evening to make sure the cache had not gone missing. It had, so he gave us a replacement, shined his nice bright flashlight up to where it belonged, waited patiently as we tried to use our untested & inadequate tool, then lent us his TOTT to get the job done. Since then, he has always been our main go-to guy whenever we have questions, comments or suggestions about caching, & he places the more challenging brand of hides that we prefer. We find his kind, yet slightly ornery demeanor as endearing.

  • MrArlie

My vote is for bjmccacher for geocacher of the month. He is a real credit to the sport

  • Winstonsmom

    Wee Willy gets my vote!!

  • qtbunny

WEE WILLY! I love finding the caches he and hikeaday place.
