7 Souvenirs of August

MakerMadness_TargetMailer_EN_vFINAL3

Click on the map to find a Maker Madness event near you!

Whether you’re a Social Butterfly or a Nature Lover, a Stats Geek, Traveler, or Puzzler (take the quiz and find out your geocacher type), it’s time to say thank you to a geocache maker near you. From March 28 – April 7, geocachers around the world will join together to celebrate the people in their community who make geocaching possible. We call this celebration Maker Madness.

Every geocacher who logs an “Attended” at a registered Maker Madness event will earn a Maker Madness souvenir.

Take a look at these tips for hosting an event that will have your guests inspired to go forth and create their own magical geocaching experiences:

1.) Think ahead. The best geocaches are not just thrown together willy- nilly.  They are a labor of love that take time and careful planning. The same should apply to your Geocaching Event. Do you need to make reservations for a venue? Do your guests need to bring their own creative supplies? Keep in mind that you have to submit your Geocaching Event at least 14 days prior to your Maker Madness celebration, which means that Monday, March 24th is the cut off date for your online submission. You will also want to submit the Maker Madness registration form as soon as your event is published.

2.) Think collaboration. Geocaches are a gift to the community. It’s time to get the community together to give back to those who make geocaching tick. To maximize the number of geocachers at your event, check to see if there is already another event published in your areaIf there’s already an event, be a team player! See if you can help the event host with planning their event.

3.) Think education and inspiration. Are you an accomplished geocache maker? This is your chance to share your mad skills and big brain with your fellow geocachers. Incorporate a class or workshop into your event to show others how you implemented your best creations, or teach them the very basics of geocache making. Imagine what it would be like if every one of your guests walked out of your event inspired to make their own awesome creation. Imagine all of the cool, new geocaches to find!

4.) Think celebration.  We heart geocache makers and we know that their local (and world) communities do too. If you yourself are not a maker, this is your chance to celebrate your favorites! Organize an event to show your appreciation, showcase their geocaches, and maybe even ask them to share a few of their best tips and tricks with all of their fans who attend the event.

We hope that these tips will help you to spread your creative geocaching juices, inspire a new generation of awesome hiders, honor your favorite makers, and (let’s hold nothing back) make your event the very best Maker Madness bash ever.

A few things to remember:

  • Dates: March 28 – April 7
  • Don’t forget to register your event after it has been published by a reviewer. Events that are not registered will not qualify for a souvenir.
  • You can check to see if your event or an event you are attending has been officially registered here.
  • Share photos and stories from your event with us on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram.
  • And don’t worry – special Maker Madness GeoCoins, Tags, Trackable Patches, and T-shirts coming soon to Shop Geocaching!
  • thisisace

Our local caching FB group have been discussing this and we’re confused as to what sort of event you’re expecting.
    Is it:

    a) celebrating our cache hiders, puzzle
setters, reviewers etc who make our pastime possible. In which case, how does it differ from any pub meet-up event we’ve done before??b) cache setters showing others how to make unusual caches / workshops, in which case that seems a strange thing to build an event around?
    c) something else?

    Please help!

  • Paige

Good question…and the answer is all of the above! Here at Geocaching HQ, we see Maker Madness as a unique opportunity to join together as a global geocaching community to show our appreciation to those who make the game we love possible – the geocache makers! (a) If you already get together to celebrate your favorite geocache hiders, then that’s great! For those who don’t already do that, we’re giving them the excuse to do so. (b) We think it’s super great if the event has an educational component. Here in Seattle we’re inviting our favorite local hiders to share there best tips and tricks for creating a great geocache experience with the rest of us. I can’t wait to take this knowledge and incorporate it into a geocache hide of my own. (c) The geocaching community is an amazingly creative community. We’re excited to see the many different ways that geocachers around the world will choose to celebrate their favorite geocache makers.

  • Tim Whitten

Will I get the souvenir for hosting one or do I have to have an attended log?

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

    Hi Tim,
You’ll need to log an “attended” to a Maker Madness event to earn a souvenir.

  • Tim Whitten

I was gonna host one, I guess I’ll still do it and hope someone else close by hosts one also.

  • Fab Seeker

When you host an event, you also attend it! You deserve it! :)

  • Tim Whitten

Don’t like to log my own events, I have it on the owned side don’t need it on the found side.

  • renMin

It seems like a great idea, but I could have used more time. My schedule would need 4 to 6 months advance notice to try and clear schedule, get venue, and brainstorm for good ideas. I just got the info today. Of course, I am probably in the minority. Stinks cause I could have put together a nice class on “adding cement to your cache design.”

  • Leif Simonsen

renMin, you don’t need a souvenir to host a geocache making event. It sounds like you have great ideas, I would come to your event any time of year!

  • bren1467

I would never log a find on my own caches, but for events – Yes! I DID attend, and log them as such. To each his own though. :)

  • Jffok

How do I get a copy of the cache page in order to create my own listing for this event.

  • HauptGirls

Why does the 2013 block party show up on the map for Maker Madness Events? If the map in this blog post is show events that don’t apply it may be discouraging cachers from hosting Maker Madness Events…

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

True. We’ll chalk that one up to a data entry error, and pull it down. Nice eagle eyes.

  • dragonswing

You got notified 11 days before me, so you are definitely not in the minority!!
Anyone know why if we choose to sign in through facebook, discus is allowed access to our page, friends, etc? Guess I try signing in through google.

  • dragonswing

It would be nice if events could be listed by state so you would know if there is one nearby. That map doesn’t do any good. And the “here” link just leads to a bunch of names and y

  • Sandra Berger

    wow none in colorado.

  • Coleen R

I do not see my Maker event listed on the map. When was the map last updated? Does the title of the event have to include the words Maker Madness even if the description does?

  • perpulady

I can’t attend the event, but I already own several caches. It’d be cool to get the souvenir for being a current ‘maker/maintainer’. :)

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Once your Maker Madness event is registered submit the event here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-tJS_D_WFRrSh1ZD3_8ty0RiMPEsJP27jn8I8X86bDQ/viewform – The map is updated regularly, and you’ll see your event on the map in no time.

  • Coleen R

Thank You. I will check on it in a day or two.

  • bonniepup

Come on Uk lets get more events happening here !

  • bonniepup

Please as no events for me can i have a souvenir to the UK on the trail more !!

  • Sandy Crawford

I enlarged the map and clicked on a dot closest to my home and it took me to all of the info I needed including the place and address, time, date etc. Of the e event.

  • Nessmuk

I have been thinking of working with cement would be very interested in what you are making with cement.

  • TeamDan327

Will there be a Maker Madness Souvenir for each day of the celebration like the 30 days of Geocaching?

  • Dare2Geocache

Help! Our event, GC4ZQJX, Maker Madness – All the Right Stuff, in Hendersonville, NC, USA, shows up on the map, but the link is broken. Can someone fix it? Thanks!

  • LouiseAnn

    Host a different event….

  • perpulady

I’ll be out of the country…

  • mihcaoj

Help! My event GC505RT shows up on the map, but not in the register list. Can someone please fix it! Thanks!

  • Paige

Yeah, I agree! That would be awesome to be able to see a bookmark list divided out by state. I’ll suggest that to the developers here at Geocaching HQ :-) Are you not able to click on the Maker Madness events? Have you tried zooming in?

  • Paige

That’s a cool idea for sure. Maybe in the future! Check out the map to see if there are any events in the country you’ll be visiting. There are over 700 events all over the world to choose from!

  • Paige

It’s on the bookmark list! Let me know if you still are unable to find it. ~Paige

  • Paige

Thanks for letting us know. Should be working now!

  • Martijn

I tried to add our event to the Maker Madness page with the form but after 2 weeks still no result. (GC4YZYG) Did I do something wrong?

  • Belinda Lane

ah missed the deadline :( , only ones near us are in the city at night during the week

  • 5inCalif4Geo

Wishing that the map was geofriendly by letting geocachers choose to find events near their homes. Also, the recent weekly newsletter DNF’S Earns Geocacher Coveted Award only lists events through the 5th. By the time the next newsletter comes to our emails, etc. the last couple days of the maker events will have passed by–unless there are none on the 6th or 7th. It would be really cool if on April 1st geocaching let cachers break the 2-week rule to be allowed to create Maker events for what are probably unpopular dates of the 6th and 7th.

  • flashtheguineapig

I attended a maker madness flash mob GC4ZKQA, and logged an attended but haven’t got my souvenir. Any ideas?

  • dr.gumpi

Its the same with me. Maybe there is only one uploading of souvenirs each day?

  • Pat

Anyone know if the Maker Madness event in Sussex County, Delaware is happening (or has already?) Ever since it went up on the map it’s been a dead link.

  • Susan Katz

I attended a Maker event last evening in Ephrata, Pa. I logged my attendance last evening and checked and the event was listed as a Maker event. As of a few minutes ago, I still did not receive the Maker souvenir. I heard from others who attended that some did get the souvenir and some did not. Is there anything I can do to make sure I get the souvenir?

  • nannerman

Our Maker’s Madness event was last night in Baton Rouge, LA. Everyone had a great time but one small hiccup was no souvenir. We are on the map and the list for official events…Any ideas what went wrong?

  • Susan Katz

We attended a Maker event last evening. I logged the event and confirmed it was registered as a Maker event. The Souvenir did not show up last evening and as of a few minutes ago, it still did not show up. I heard from others who attended that some got the souvenir and some did not. Is there anything I can do to make sure that I get the sourvenir? (2katzhunt)

  • flashtheguineapig

Is it that it’s only a premium member thing?

  • dr.gumpi

No, it isn’t. Some non premium members on other event have already got their souvenirs.

  • nannerman

    Finally showed up

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Susan, your souvenir is now on your profile. Checked, and double-checked. We re-issued a few hundreds after a hiccup last night in the ol’ system. Thanks for letting us know, and thanks for attending a Maker Madness event. Please share any inspired geocaches that come from the gathering. We’d love to see!

  • Nanauar

my event GC50E6W is published in the official list but doesn’t appear in the map. Is this normal ? I need to be sure that at least, people will get the badge, while attending my event ! Thanks !!
