1 Geocaching App Trick to Rule Them All

WeeklyMailer_101413_OfflineLists_vFINAL_blogIt’s a button that makes geocaching out of the country or in the deep prehistoric world of “no cell phone service” as easy as a Terrain 1, Difficulty 1. Whether you’re using the Geocaching Pro App for iPhone or theGeocaching Android App, this miracle of engineering simplicity is called “Save to Offline List.”

Use a Wi-Fi hot spot to load up your Offline List with geocaches. Then, turn off your data roaming and look under “Saved” on iPhones or “Offline Lists” on Android and SHAZZAM! Your geocaches are available, your phone isn’t using costly roaming data, and you’re saving battery life. You can sort the list by distance, Favorite Points, title, GC code or geocache type.

Another option for Premium Members is using a Pocket Query. For example, if you’re headed to the last remaining APE Cache in the jungles of Brazil, here’s what to do: create a Pocket Query (Saved List) of all the geocaches in that area on Geocaching.com and then save it on your phone as an Offline List when you have cell service. Another tip, make sure your phone is fully charged for your adventure.

Now you’re off into the wild with plenty of geocaches loaded up and ready to go.

Good advice, now tell me what I can do about the updated android app. I updated when it came out, but now it no longer lets me select get directions which used to turn on my gps and it would just talk me all the way to the cache. Now I either have to use the map or the compass which is tough when you have no idea where you are. Is there a way to get this back or go back to the old version.

This also works with the app for Windows Phone, but you guys can make it even better if you use the Bing SDK (Bing is your default map anyway) which uses any offline maps you’ve downloaded to the phone. Then you get both your caches and map all offline.

I have the same app and there is a tab that lets you select “navigate”( it’s an icon not a word) and it will speak your directions. When your map comes up look at the too off the screen for that icon that looks like a fork in the road with arrows

  • Hannah

Hmm…Can you tell me where to find the “Save to Offline List.” bit in the Android App? – I can’t see it anywhere since I updated to v3.1?!

  • PeGC56

The icon actually looks like a “right turn sign” (diamond with an arrow that goes up and to the right). I just looked this morning; I didn’t have my phone on me last night when I replied. But it still does the same thing; touch it and to get your spoken navigation. It is a small icon at the top of the screen and do wish it was larger and one of the more apparent options like it used to be

When you touch to bring up a cache you need to scroll down farther than you used to to find “Save to Offline List”

  • Hannah

    Nothing there :(

  • PeGC56

can you not slide your screen up (scroll) more? On my screen Save to Offline is 3 spots below Photos.

  • Hannah

wow, that’s crazy – I can’t scroll beyond ‘photos’ – it is the last item on the menu :/

  • PeGC56

WOW! That is crazy…. how do you submit your logs? Do you have to wait and do it on the computer?

  • Hannah

nope – you click the ‘found it’ button and it triggers the log form.
The little folded corner bit on the bottom right of the ‘found it’ button allows you to change ‘found it’ to ‘didn’t find it’ / ‘needs maintenance’ / ‘needs archived’ / ‘write note’ / etc.

I’ve tried doing a reinstall of the app. but it hasn’t made any difference.
Hope they fix this issue soon – especially as it’s a ‘feature’ they are blogging about :(

  • PeGC56

Well see there, I don’t have a “Found It Button”! I scroll down to “Post a Log”. It appears that Android market has at least 2 different versions. Mine is a Galaxy S3…..So I guess maybe it depends on which phone you have. Very odd.

The Offline List was such a nice function, especially when traveling. Too bad Groundspeak removed it from the latest “improvement” to the Android app.

  • Darren

It pops up using the bottom menu button on your phone.

NEED TO CONFIRM THE COUNTERINTUITIVE THOUGHT THAT YOU ARE NOT USING SATELLITE/ROAMING WHEN NAVIGATING TO A SAVED CACHE??

  • PeGC56

That I don’t know…. the “save to offline” is new to me also. The reply above was just to a statement about not getting the spoken direction with the new app. I would assume that anytime you are using a GPS map to navigate you are using satellite/roaming. But I really dunno

  • Neonride93

What about Maps? Does it have an offline feature for maps?
