I agree. It’s something to try and may be a chance in some areas to get more people involved in geocaching.

  • Jonathan Patten

I love the geo souvenir idea. It’s a great way to make a goal and set objectives for my kids to value collecting intangible things as well. Iv set my callender reminder to remind me each day so I don’t miss out. TFTC!!

  • Mr.RA

    Que LOKURA…

  • Einnorder

A souvenir is something to remember. What is so special on August 2013? Nothing! This is ridiculous.
I don’t want this useless stuff in my profile. Fire the guy who had this idea, he is not worth the money.

  • Einnorder

I tell you why: The company groundspeak wastes the money they got from their customers instead of investing it in useful things e.g. a fast website

  • jo

Read the info. It’s pretty simple. For each day that you find 1 cache or attend an event in August, you get a souvenir. 31 days in August=31 caches found=31 souvenirs.

  • tuff cookie

I can see your point on the design but then maybe that’s the point, they want to get parents to get their children our there to gain mini awards for exploring and finding treasures, I’ll be doing as many as possible, unsure if I’ll get as full 31

  • someguy23

It’s almost amusing how many negative comments there are. It is, after all, intended to be a sport for everyone. And since you can’t make everyone happy I guess it stands to reason there would be complaints.

I will be playing, but because it’s motivating me to try for my first semi-serious streak. The souvenirs are not the motivation for me, but my nine year old thinks they’re pretty amusing so he’s into trying as well.

Frankly I’m of the belief that if you are going to complain, you also need to be able to offer constructive alternatives. Yes there’s work to do with the website, but there’s nothing wrong with a little fun. It keeps people motivated and they perform better. This is supposed to be a fun sport after all, isn’t it?

  • L yeater

So…Why do you cache? Just ’cause you cache differently, doesn’t mean you should spoil it for others….keep your rudeness to yourself

  • thomas

It’s fun to collect Souvenirs, and a challenge is not that expensive, and if a website is slow that’s your router…

  • georondi

This August challenge is finally getting my daughter to try geocaching. I think it is a great way to get newbies involved.

  • Alan

These are kind of like participation trophies, nice and fun to get but don’t really mean anything. I’d prefer one per month where you earn it if you average 1+ per day that month, so need at least 31 in August to get one that month. Find zero some days, find other days, and get the 31. If they really want to increase the number of the souvenir perhaps make one for each county in each state or each city?

Maybe this will get more people playing so will be a good thing overall? I assume that is their hope and reason for trying it. I’ll go for the 31 day streak challenge. Without it I likely would have found at least 31 anyway though not one each day.

  • Kalie Dalton

I am really looking forward to this streak, and our team will be doing its level best to complete, thanks HQ and just ignore the negative comments

  • Paula Taylor

I didn’t realize it costs so much to design a few jpgs. Oh wait, it doesn’t. I could have done it for free in an afternoon.

  • Don Courville

I can’t seem to find the sign in button to down vote some of these posts, but I’ll leave a comment anyway.. There are a lot of people bashing the 31 day souvenir hunt, and the company too. Talking about wasting customer’s money and such. Hey, if you don’t like it.. don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.. on your way out

  • marsue-wildlife

It all adds a bit more fun to Geocaching so why not, good show.

  • Travis Smola

Well said. Just my opinion, but those who are complaining are wasting too much time in front of the computer and on the website. Go out, find some caches and quit worrying about silly things like a tab full of pictures that hardly anyone looks at anyway!

  • Guest

I think it’s a great idea. I will not be going for all the souvenirs as I have other things to do rather than geocaching every day but I like the idea and I love souvenirs. I will grab a few of the souvenirs for myself and will enjoy it. I suggest others try to enjoy it as well! There should be something for every geocacher in the game and if you don’t like souvenirs at least be happy for those who do. I really do not consider it wasting money and if anyone thinks that way he or she can always choose to be a basic member when your subscription is due for renewal so none of your money goes to ‘waste’!

Question… We will be geocaching but won’t have internet access everyday to log our finds. We also are probably the only people left geocaching that don’t have a smart phone so we can’t log them when we find them. If I log a weeks worth once we get back home, one for each day that we found them, will they count for the day we log that we found them or only count for the day that we logged them all in?

  • jon

Well……..as its been said, like it or not, do it or don’t do it. I like caching, my wife likes caching, and the kids like caching. We cache whenever we can. Are souvenirs useless and arbitrary, I don’t know nor care. We will cache as much as possible, souvenirs or not. Plus, it gives me an excuse to pull the top off of the Jeep. Happy Caching to all!

  • Katherine Anne McMillan

Hi Guys! The only thing more fun than earning a souvenir, is reading the comments here! :-D Next year could we have a souvenir art contest and the winners will be the August souvenirs? I bet there is some awesome artistic talent in our caching clan! cheers!

  • Jubeloh

Some people just want to complain. This is a hobby, so why make an issue out of it?

As for me, I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ve already nabbed a cache on 1 August. One down, thirty to go!

Cache on. (Or not, if you prefer).

  • Einnorder

Funny. Either you are an expert in DTP and marketing (congrats in this case) or you have no idea about the efforts and costs behind this.
What will come next? Earn a souvenir for each day in 2014? The originally nice idea of a souvenir ist simply degraded to getting points. The more points you have the better cacher you are.

  • TheGroundhogz

I think this is fun! I am new to this so it is exciting. If you don’t find one how do you log “attended” as I said I am very very new.

  • scienceteacher42

I don’t think this cost them a lot of money, and it is a one time expense. Faster websites are an ongoing expense that requires additional money each month, indefinitely. This just adds a little extra motivation to get out and cache each day. Not a big deal, but fun!

  • Gwen Coomer-Parise Snider

I am a total novice (less than 20 finds) but am very much looking forward to doing this! I agree with everyone who stated that is is a great way to get new cachers involved. Sorry the experienced people may not like it, but we all start somewhere. . . .

  • BWelcker

Yeah! Let’s bring back “classic” geocaching. When I was a young lad, all you got was a compass and a piece of paper that said “somewhere in Oregon”. And there weren’t any fancy “bisons” or “lock-n-locks” – cache containers were rusty soup cans that would cut your fingers when you tried to open them. Travel bugs? More like cockroaches! And what’s with this “tweeting” and “facebooking” – what’s wrong with good old NNTP? Gee whiz!

  • Ritter Ramon

is there a way to delete these 31 souvenirs or to prevent?

  • Angela Sue Yarnell

Thank you very much for a sane answer to all the negative comments. The old adage still holds true “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.

  • Quinton Smith

Einnorder…if you are SO negative stop Geocaching. Its NOT hard to design a jpeg. If you have access to google and PhotoShop than you can do it.

  • EHRose

Attended means you attended a geocaching event that was held on that day.
So if you’re searching for caches and don’t find any you can’t just log “attended” somewhere to get credit for the day.

  • Nelomo

AmCan2, Yes, you can log them on the days that you find them. You can wait until August 31 to log everything you found and just change the date to when you found it. Then your souvenirs will appear for the days you have.

  • Nelomo

Here’s my thought. What if? At the end of the month your daily souvenirs turned into one souvenir that was the Calendar with a Smilie on the days that you achieved a find? Make it a Mega Souvenir?

  • it-lion

    love this idea
never even realised there was a souvenir tab even though i already had 3
just one question: do you need to log the find on the same day or do you still get the souvenir if you log it the next day (with of course the correct date set)

  • AmCan2

Thanks a lot for the information, Neloma! Heading out in a few minutes to grab one for today :)

  • Bob

How do you earn the souvenir for a particular day is is like a picture or legitament item haha I’m new at this?

  • Sling Sand!

    Get over it!!!

  • geo paparazzi

Well said. Caching also gets me out and in the case of tonight, a run.

  • Colleen Foyn

Did someone steal your Christmas presents as a child? Seriously, all I am seeing in every post of yours is a bah humbug negativity. If you don’t want to play, that’s fine, but stop spoiling it for the rest of us.

  • Colleen Foyn

You just need to log a cache on the day that you want the souvenir (or every day)

  • Colleen Foyn

I’m not put off by all the negative nancy’s on here, finding them mildly annoying. I will be caching every day for all the souvenirs, and already nabbed my first one yesterday. The game is supposed to be fun, so if it is for you, then do it. If not, take up a spirited game of bridge or cards, but please leave the rest of us alone to enjoy ourselves, without your pessimism. Thanks.

I am a Newbie however, I LOVE getting Souvenirs! It’s exciting and helps to Social network with others. I kept checking and at the end of my day i got my Day 1 #31in31 Souvenir and I was very happy to see it populate on my profile. I check others souvenir tab to see all the neat places they have traveled and it motivates me to remember to go GEOcache when I travel. Can’t wait to go on my next trip so I can get a souvenir from that country. Geocaching is something fun to do anywhere your at. How cool is that! We can get into political conflict at work. NOT HERE. Just relax, enjoy & don’t make it complicated.

Day 2 completed, and day 214 from my geocaching streak!
I even made a little HTML version from this Printable Calendar!

I am looking forward to getting as many of the August souvenirs as I
can. I love the souvenirs and a chance to get over 30 in one month is
amazing. In the past years it has been hard to get motivated to go
geocaching in August. But now I am very motivated and looking forward to
this geo-journey, you never quite know where it will take you.

I was surprised to find that not every geocacher is as excited as I am
about these souvenirs. But that is fine with me. I learned a long time
ago that everyone is different and they see the world different than I
do. I love to read about how others see this sport and why they enjoy or
not like certain aspects of it. Have fun geocaching this month either
because of the souvenirs or in spite of them, your choice.

  • PatientRock

Heh. Originally wasn’t going to participate but seeing the negative nellies on this post means that I simply HAVE to. It’s going to be fun trying to cache every day!

  • Thomas

    I agree with NelisMcFly
Why are so many people negative about the August Challenge. I love souvenirs along with caching and I am trying hard to work out how I can get one a day.
I can’t believe the number of negative and downright rude comments posted. If you don’t like it then don’t do it. As for the comment that the money could be better spent elsewhere-we already get a lot for our $30.00. The Geocaching team should be congratulated.
Caching is a fun sport-lets keep it that way and for those negative people who are only concerned with their ‘streak’, please remember it is not all about you-there are other cachers in it for the fun.

  • elrojo14

Geocaching is what you make it. I bet half of the people on here complaining have rarely ever looked at their souvenir page. I bet by 2014, hardly anyone will remember or care about the 31 Day of August souvenirs. However, I bet Geocaching use is up and definitely there are people out finding caches and having a good time because of this.

So if you don’t care about souvenirs, continue to not care and do whatever caching makes you happy. The gigantic power trail in Nevada that I have no interest in finding is no threat to my existence or my Geocaching experience. I just won’t go find it. That I will have 31 new souvenirs for doing nothing more than planning an event in town for 27 of the days in August isn’t going to ruin my life.

Just keep remembering Geocaching is what YOU make it. It isn’t about anyone else unless you want to make it about everyone else and have more than anyone else. However, that is still what you make it. So if you don’t like souvenirs, don’t click on that page. Life isn’t that hard.

  • David_Shomper

I agree, 31 separate souvenirs is excessive. Just 1 indicating the total number of August days with finds would be better.
