They aren’t about the numbers, they are about the places geocaching takes us to.”

Pele53

Pele53

Pele53 – Geocacher of the Month Nominee

Göran “McBack” Back nominated Esko Aspholm alias “Pele53.” Pele53 has won several awards for best geocaches, and hosted regular Event Caches throughout 2012 and into 2013. McBack says one series in Finland demonstrates Pele53′s geocaching ingenuity. McBack says, “He has made many caches with a lot of work behind them. He had 4 nightcaches, with a lot of work behind, with the theme Snowwhite and the seven dwarfs.

The first of them is the house where they live, where Sleepy and Snowwhite is, the second was The hunters cabin, the third The princes castle and the last was the mine where the rest of the dwarfs where. The whole trail was tracked by “diamonds” in the forest, just in case Snowwhite had to find them. The first of these actually won the Ostrobothnian best other cache 2011.

One of the latest mystery “Eihän tässä ole mitään järkeä!“  (translated like “After all, this makes no sense!”) that was voted the best cache of 2012 in Finland. This has also been mentioned in magazines and even the local radio station. It needs something special to be opened, that many of us has with us when geocaching. But with about 20 geocachers at site for the First to Find hunt, they needed to call help to get it opened. =D So many of his caches are made with lot of work, and he still have many ideas to new caches.”

OHMIC

Ohmic - Geocacher of the Month Nominee

Ohmic – Geocacher of the Month Nominee

Josh Bernier (username Stonagal) nominates OHMIC. He says, “With close to 15,000 finds, Jacques, OHMIC has found more geocaches than any other geocacher in the Canadian province of Manitoba.  He has more than 130 published caches, over six cache types.  But the biggest reason I think he should be the Geocacher of the Month is because of the great work he has done in providing quality events for local geocachers.  OHMIC is an interpreter at the Oak Hammock Marsh.  For the past seven years, he has hosted an event in May called “Cache the Marsh“.  Geocachers split into teams and explore the Interpretive Centre’s numerous exhibits to get clues as to the locations of several caches.  It’s a mad race for some new FTFs, and along the way cachers learn about wetlands ecosystems and wildlife.  It’s a great family-friendly competitive event that ends with a barbecue.  This was the seventh year OHMIC has planned and hosted the event, and it lived up to the great things I had heard other cachers say about it. OHMIC is also a Platinum-level Earthcache Master, and the owner of a local favourite series of caches named for Santa’s reindeer.”

roymerc

roymerc - nominee for Geocacher of the Month

roymerc – nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Peter Dose, TeamDose nominated, roymerc. He says, “Roymerc may be the best “cache placer” in Western Australia.  We have travelled from the far North down to the deep South of WA, and when we came across Roy’s cache’s in the Denmark area, we knew we had found something special.  He puts an exceptional amount of time and effort into the design and creation of these cache masterpieces – and as a result has attracted a large number of favourite points.  There is not one of Roy’s active caches which do not have at least 1 favourite point – fairly unique we would think in the caching world.

Each cache is unique and special in its own way.  Some of the caches involve electricity, other of the caches involve complex machinery. Roy’s “Bring Your Own Battery” series is also unique, and has inspired copies further afield in places like Perth.

Denmark is a very beautiful part of Australia, and with Roy living there it is also extra special for all geocachers.  We think roymerc is awesome, and so do many other cachers judging by the number of favourite points he has accumulated in such a remote part of the world!  For these reasons, we believe he deserves to be recognised as a cacher of the month!”

  • wally_k

I would like to submit my vote for OHMIC! He is by far the most influential and guiding person in my geocaching sphere!

  • Total Nut

My vote is for OHMIC. Geocaching is about exploring new places and visiting new locations. For some that may be going to the nearest state park or next town. For some it may just be visiting the other side of the city you live in but never explore .

OHMIC takes it to a whole other level. He truly explores .He has been to ALL 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. He has seen a total of 31 different countries around this place we call earth .

Geocaching is also dependent on volunteerism. With 132 well maintained caches around Manitoba he is a leader for our ever growing community.

  • Tracker 70

I vote for OHMIC. He is a great teacher to the newbies and his favourite saying is just one more.

  • firnsy

roymerc gets my vote. Roy’s caches in the South West are legendary within the Western Australian caching community, and I suspect further afield. I haven’t had the opportunity to get down to Roy’s territory, so was rapt when I noticed that he recently released a couple of caches closer to home. This weekend, I went to grab those and to see for myself the workmanship of this caching legend. I wasn’t disappointed! :-D The first one (GC4D33X) was a camo cache in plain view that I didn’t notice until I was searching right next to the cache for something else (pre-conceived notion). The second one (GC44E33) was a mechanical masterpiece … easy to find, but a bit of a challenge to open. I’m looking forward to taking a trip south later this year to experience some more of roymerc’s creations.

  • Kate Myors

I’m voting for roymerc. His caches make me want to introduce everyone I know to geocaching. They are clever and witty with lots of thought put into them. I also know that he helps other people with their caches. He’s very good at promoting geocaching by setting a wonderful example for all of us to aspire to.

  • The Black Flight

OHMIC gets my vote. It is simple. I have never heard of anyone who does so much to promote caching.
Much of what he does happens without fanfare or recognition.
It was a friend working on an Indian Reserve who told me about this amazing man who came out to spend the day teaching and reaching out to the kids and adults, using caching as his tool.
When I asked him if it was indeed he who had been the one doing the workshop he almost seemed embarrassed that his good work had been found out.
While other candidates seem to exceptional cachers, I cannot speak to whether or not any one is better then another, what I can speak to however is to the worthiness of OHMIC.

  • Kabuthunk

Voting for OHMIC over here. WOOH, GO CANADA!

  • Tim Turner

    OHMIC is the most energetic,
enthusiastic person you could ever hope to meet! He’s an unstoppable cacher and
hosts a very well organized and fun geocaching day every year. He’s Manitoba’s
#1 finder and I’ve had the pleasure of finding several thousand caches with him
on desert power trails. OHMIC is tireless! He’ll talk the ears off any
non-cacher and you can bet they’ll be a geocachers by the time their
conversation is over! OHMIC has also been a great media representative for
geocaching in Manitoba doing many interviews for print and radio. OHMIC was
also the promotions director on the Manitoba Geocaching Association for several
years. I vote OHMIC for May cacher-of-the-month!

  • MCFonz

    I’m voting for roymerc.

It’s not about the numbers ;) and roymerc has gone to prove that in he isn’t about getting out there for a numbers grab. It appears to this cacher, and probably many more, the man is more in it for everyone else’s enjoyment, promoting the lovely town he lives in and geocaching in general. His creations are eagerly waited for and involve all sorts of unusual bits and bobs recycled to make masterpiece caches which are generally placed in areas that are meant for people to explore.

Caching at its finest. The amount of awarded favourite points go to prove this.

  • 4elements5senses

My vote is for OHMIC. He has hosted many training sessions for new cachers and he has also organized numerous caching events. OHMIC’s annual Cache the Marsh event is a favourite of new and seasoned cachers alike, and is renowned around Manitoba. Not only is OHMIC knowledgeable about wildlife, ecosystems, waterfowl and the environment, he also puts forth a huge effort to incorporate opportunities for learning into his caches and the events that he organizes and hosts. OHMIC is a true ambassador of geocaching, and he regularly engages in numerous television and radio interviews to promote the sport. OHMIC is friendly, outgoing and his enthusiasm for caching is nothing short of contagious! His limitless energy and dedication to geocaching is legendary in Manitoba. OHMIC is a very worthy nominee for Cacher of the Month – Yeah Jacques!!

  • Stan Enns

OHMIC stands out as an excellent all-around geocacher. Excellent hides. Super energetic finder. A tireless ambassador.
    He’s got it all!

  • okeeffek

OHMIC would make a great cacher of the month. I have seen him in action answering questions from non-cachers of the cuff. The game couldn’t have a friendlier, more enthusiastic ambassador.

  • Moneybox

We are voting for Roymerc because he deserves to be formally recognised for his contribution to our sport. We visited some of his caches back in 2010 shortly after we joined Geocaching and his fabulous caches gave us the inspiration to create caches that are a bit more than a box buried in the bush. Although we’ve never met, his magnificent caches have set the benchmark at a level we can only wish to achieve. Hopefully others will take his lead in creating interesting caches for us all to enjoy. Thank you Roymerc.

  • Jo-Ann Walls

I vote for OHMIC! His awesome personality is positively addictive to be around!

  • Lynda. L.

my vote is for Ohmic it is said by 2 of his co-workers (that are not cachers) his passion runs so high for geocaching ,When he tells his stories you can hear the excitement in his voice .

  • Laura Rose

My vote is for OHMIC. One can’t help but be interested in geocaching after meeting OHMIC and observing his excitement and passion about it. He puts so much detail, time, thought and effort into his events and caches. He loves what he does and he wants others to love it just as much as he does.

  • H2O de mer

My vote is for OHMIC, c’est un géocacheur sympathique , d’expérience et d’une grande générosité .

Il s’investit beaucoup dans la communauté et il adore le géocaching!!

    H2O de Mer . Québec,Canada

  • Scott Hewitt

Without a doubt, OHMIC is a fantastic choice for Cacher of the Month. I have attended his “Cache the Marsh” event many times over the years. It is a fantastic, well-planned event, and he is a very accommodating host. One of the most impressive abilities OHMIC has is his way of passionately explaining the activity of geocaching to anyone who cares to know. Whether it is a television or radio interview to many (of which he has done plenty) or a single 7 year old child, he excitedly relates his love of the discovery of a new cache, or the mysteries of the earth made clear with one of his earth caches. Manitoba is home to a passionate group of geocachers, but if asked who was the most prolific of the group, there would likely be one name on the ballot, OHMIC.

  • Georectified

Our vote is for OHMIC. We’ve cached with him from Australia to places all over Manitoba and we have never encountered another cacher with the tenacity and passion that he exhibits. Manitoba is probably one of the most difficult places to cache year around and it speaks to his energy for the activity that he continually manages to find over 100 caches a month in every season. He has been an ambassador for caching for many years, is always eager to help new cachers and is frequently in the media promoting the activity. His events are legendary and draw in cachers from a broad area. He consistently hides quality caches with thoughtfulness and a view to provide something new or share an idea or information. OHMIC is an all around great guy and it is our pleasure to vote for him.

  • Sandra Forbes

My vote is for OHMIC. He is a true ambassador for geocaching. Not only is he an avid geocacher himself, but he spends a tremendous amount of time and effort promoting the sport. He has given countless presentations to travel and tourism groups to educate them on how to use geocaching to draw visitors to their areas. He also hosts an annual Cache The Marsh event at the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre. This is a very popular event in Manitoba which attracts not only geocachers, but also families that want to learn more about it. The caches are always fun and educational. It is always fun to go caching with OHMIC. I can’t think of anyone that deserves to be Cacher of the Month more than OHMIC. Good luck, my friend!
