Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as the Featured Geocacher of the Month for January.

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these geocachers you feel should be awarded the Featured Geocacher of the Month title.

In December, Wayne, a.k.a. Moneydork was recognized for establishing himself as one of Australasian’s most prolific geocachers. His efforts to support the community as a Geocaching volunteer reviewer and good Samaritan have not gone unnoticed. He even managed to organize New Zealand’s very first Mega-Event from 3500 km (2175 miles) away. According to fellow geocachers, Moneydork’s hides and events are legendary Down Under and he never hesitates to give his all to the sport.

Here are your nominees for the January Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Kirret

Kirret

Mr Bluesky writes, “On November 29th, Don, [a.k.a. Kirret] will have found a geocache every single day of the year, since November 2011.  He has done this in three different countries and on two continents. This year alone he has found over 1,700 geocaches, including a grand haul of 100 on March the 27th. Don worked in Scotland in 2010 and 2011 and I got to meet him through geocaching. We immediately became firm friends. I had the pleasure of geocaching with him in Canada in July 2012 and then again on August 18th in Scotland. Don is very enthusiastic about geocaching and has, just by meeting people while out geocaching, gotten many involved in this hobby by informing them of what he was doing and how enjoyable it is. He mostly geocaches with his wife and son and is one of Guildford, England’s most prolific geocachers. He is out in all weather conditions with a smile on his face and a GPS in hand. I think his achievements this year is a remarkable feat.”

The Raven

The Raven

ttcm4geo writes, “If you visit Prescott, Arizona as we were one weekend, you will note something curious. Many of the geocaches you visit will have a note stating that ‘while you are in Prescott, you must find a geocache called Raven’s Labyrynth.’ So many geocacher said this that we finally decided to pursue it. The geocache itself is amazing, which I am sure took weeks to construct. Then we found out that the geocache owner has many similarly thought-out geocaches in the area. In fact, Prescott is known as ‘Ravenland.’ But, even more amazing is that if you email Dan, a.k.a. The Raven with a question, he promptly replies and tells you to call him. So we called him and got some assistance. He was very nice, and you can tell that his only goal is to help people enjoy geocaching. His geocaches are creative, well thought out and so much fun. He does all this work for people many of whom he will never meet. Therefore, I think he deserves this recognition.”

The Weasel

The Weasel

SuperGoober writes, “Tim, a.k.a. The Weasel is what geocaching is all about. He gives back so much more than he takes. He hosted the very first CITO in the Midwest: EIGA 2004 CEDAR RAPIDS CITO EVENT. He is an active member and Board Director for the Iowa Geocacher Organization and a volunteer for the Linn County Conservation. Tim has conducted and assisted in over 50 geocaching 101, 201 and 301 classes and workshops throughout the State of Iowa and abroad. His knowledge of the wilderness extends well beyond that of an average geocacher. He uses his extensive knowledge of the outdoors to help other geocachers by placing some very creative and educational geocaches. The Weasel has an impeccable sense as to what geocaching is all about. He realizes that cache maintenance is very necessary to ensure that geocaching is fun and that the geocache is there. He is just unstoppable.”

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

  1. The Weasel!!’ You can’t talk about Iowa caches and not hear The Weasel’s name! You have to respect a cacher who has placed the number of quality of caches he has and still has time to keep up with all of his maint AND promote the sport like he does. You can always spot the Weasel at events. He is the guy making the rounds making sure he talks to everybody. His promoting of the sport is second to none. I think his stats on his profile speak for itself! The Weasel is a true ambassador for this sport!

  2. Don’t know the other guys other than from the write ups. The Raven is amazing at what he does and gets my vote.

  3. My brother told me this guy has the best stuff anywhere. I have even waterjet cut parts for him. The Raven!

  4. I vote for “The Weasel”. I have met him a number of times at events and he always had a positive attitude and is an asset to the geocaching community.

  5. “The Raven” My family is looking forward to Prescot Az as it warms back up for his great hides and friendship

  6. Yes! I have to go with my gut! When I am hungry I always want the best! When I go caching I want the best!
When one like “The Raven” gets all those favorites it makes me hungry for some grindage! So my vote goes to Daniel hunt as I am a starved geocacher

  7. My vote is for The Weasel for his superb education Outdoor Lessons caches. Thanks for teaching me a thing or 2!!!

  8. My vote goes 100% to The Weasel!! His Outdoor Lessons are in a league of their own! I have done several caches that have taken me to neat places, have neat containers, but these caches actually TEACH you a LOT! When I first attempted to figure his Outdoor Lesson about animal tracks, I was struggling quite a bit and didn’t have a clue on how to figure them out. I contacted The Weasel about his cache to see if I could get some help/direction on it. In these day and ages in caches, it would have been VERY easy for The Weasel to just give me the final coords and send me on my way. Instead, The Weasel actually took the time to explain and TEACH me about tracks. I could tell in this interaction that The Weasel has a passion not only for caching, but also to help other people and expand their knowledge base at all. To me, this is what defines a “Geocacher Of The Month”. Placing caches, having neat containers is a neat quality, but learning something while you are getting a smiley is what defines a GREAT cache in my mind. Thanks again for broadening my knowledge base Weasel! I really hope that you win as you define what a Geocacher Of The Month” is!

  9. First off, all of the nominees are outstanding! Each are deserving of winning, however my vote goes to The Weasel. I think his educational stance of wanting to teach people is very commendable and should be rewarded.

  10. Wow, if ever a month they need to have multiple winners, I think this is the one. The Weasel gets my vote for his constant contributions and promotion of education and his creative way of doing that.

  11. Got to go with my man The Weasel. His constant contributions to Iowa caching is amazing. The fact that he teaches people and has the full support of the city and county parks dept says a lot. I hope you win Weasel!!

  12. THE RAVEN!!!
I vote for the raven because his geo caches are astonishing and they are built with passion. The raven should get this award because he does it for him self and for others. 🙂

  13. I vote for Tim “The Weasel” When he’s on the scent of a cache, nothing will stop him. You should see him crawl up steep hills. Great cacher, fun to be with

  14. I have to go with the person who has thought me a TON of stuff about the outdoors with his remarkable Outdoor Lessons series. Every time I see a feather, leaf, animal track or bug, I try to use what I learned to identify it. Speaking if which, I have a picture to send you of a feather I found that I would like to know what it is. 🙂

  15. The Raven gets my vote. He’s such a generous and helpful person and people drive or fly 1000s of miles just to do his caches. He epitomizes what it means to be a community focused geocacher.

  16. I wish I could vote for more than one person, but the Weasel got my vote. Like the Raven, the Weasel has caches that have people that make special trips for his caches. Not sure how the decision will be made, it will be hard. Congrats Weasel!

  17. I can only speak to the one geocacher in this slate whom I have met, who is the Weasel. I can’t say that he is more worthy than any of the other cachers (since I haven’t met them), but I can say that he is a great ambassador for the activity. He has hosted events and has placed a wide variety of cache hides. He has placed a number of educational puzzle caches. He maintains his caches well and is helpful to his fellow cachers. He has been active is the Iowa Geocachers Board of Directors. All in all, he has been active and a good representative of geocaching to the wider community.

  18. Gotta go with The Weasel for his work in the communtiy. Did some searching and here is the article from the newspaper in 2004 when The Weasel hosted the first CITO event. There is also a pic from The Weasel’s maint cache with Dennis Goemaat the Deputy Director of the Linn County Conservation.

  19. I can’t personaly recall doing a weasel cache as he is from a diffrent part of the state. I have though on several occasions had the pleasure to meet him at several different event. I know he has done much in promoting this sport of geo-caching; with his knowledge of the outdoors and his many 101, 201, and 301 informational events that he conducts, and being an Iowa Geocachers Organization member for many many years before stepping down for new blood.

I there for would recommend The Weasel as the January Geocacher of the Month.

  20. My vote goes to The Weasel. As an educator I greatly appreciate his “Outdoor Lesson” mystery caches. Students have a wonderful time doing the puzzles while learning something at the same time. Sure Geocaching is a fun activity but the educational value is often overlooked. Thank you to The Weasel for being a geo-ambassador for the academic community!
