January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

They put on events, they readily share geocaching tricks and tips and they challenge new and seasoned geocachers with their hides. They are the January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees.

December 2012 Featured Geocacher of the Month, Moneydork

Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as the Featured Geocacher of the Month for January.

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these geocachers you feel should be awarded the Featured Geocacher of the Month title.

In December, Wayne, a.k.a. Moneydork was recognized for establishing himself as one of Australasian’s most prolific geocachers. His efforts to support the community as a Geocaching volunteer reviewer and good Samaritan have not gone unnoticed. He even managed to organize New Zealand’s very first Mega-Event from 3500 km (2175 miles) away. According to fellow geocachers, Moneydork’s hides and events are legendary Down Under and he never hesitates to give his all to the sport.

Here are your nominees for the January Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Kirret

Kirret

Mr Bluesky writes, “On November 29th, Don, [a.k.a. Kirret] will have found a geocache every single day of the year, since November 2011.  He has done this in three different countries and on two continents. This year alone he has found over 1,700 geocaches, including a grand haul of 100 on March the 27th. Don worked in Scotland in 2010 and 2011 and I got to meet him through geocaching. We immediately became firm friends. I had the pleasure of geocaching with him in Canada in July 2012 and then again on August 18th in Scotland. Don is very enthusiastic about geocaching and has, just by meeting people while out geocaching, gotten many involved in this hobby by informing them of what he was doing and how enjoyable it is. He mostly geocaches with his wife and son and is one of Guildford, England’s most prolific geocachers. He is out in all weather conditions with a smile on his face and a GPS in hand. I think his achievements this year is a remarkable feat.”

The Raven

The Raven

ttcm4geo writes, “If you visit Prescott, Arizona as we were one weekend, you will note something curious. Many of the geocaches you visit will have a note stating that ‘while you are in Prescott, you must find a geocache called Raven’s Labyrynth.’ So many geocacher said this that we finally decided to pursue it. The geocache itself is amazing, which I am sure took weeks to construct. Then we found out that the geocache owner has many similarly thought-out geocaches in the area. In fact, Prescott is known as ‘Ravenland.’ But, even more amazing is that if you email Dan, a.k.a. The Raven with a question, he promptly replies and tells you to call him. So we called him and got some assistance. He was very nice, and you can tell that his only goal is to help people enjoy geocaching. His geocaches are creative, well thought out and so much fun. He does all this work for people many of whom he will never meet. Therefore, I think he deserves this recognition.”

The Weasel

The Weasel

SuperGoober writes, “Tim, a.k.a. The Weasel is what geocaching is all about. He gives back so much more than he takes. He hosted the very first CITO in the Midwest: EIGA 2004 CEDAR RAPIDS CITO EVENT. He is an active member and Board Director for the Iowa Geocacher Organization and a volunteer for the Linn County Conservation. Tim has conducted and assisted in over 50 geocaching 101, 201 and 301 classes and workshops throughout the State of Iowa and abroad. His knowledge of the wilderness extends well beyond that of an average geocacher. He uses his extensive knowledge of the outdoors to help other geocachers by placing some very creative and educational geocaches. The Weasel has an impeccable sense as to what geocaching is all about. He realizes that cache maintenance is very necessary to ensure that geocaching is fun and that the geocache is there. He is just unstoppable.”

  • bfortune

My vote is for the Weasel.

  • John R Moore

I have to give my nod and vote to the Weasel. He has placed many ingenious caches, and had me climbing 40 foot trees more than once. In fact, he and SuperGoober were honorees in my first 5/5 cache placement, named in their honor and designed using several concepts I picked up from them in tribute. Thanks for all the fun Weasel, and look forward to seeing you again this year!

  • Steve

I like what the Weasel is doing

  • Marge Helsell

Tim Stewart (The Weasel) is a very active cacher. He has placed numerous caches in our area and does an excellent job of maintaining his caches. He is always willing to help other cachers.

  • jackpine-savage

We vote for The Weasel! Tim is a high quality geocacher who puts out high quality puzzles and caches. They are among our favorites. In fact, our favorite area of the state to cache, is his backyard. Tim and his friend, Supergoober, never fail to challenge us or make us smile with their creativity and style! We also appreciate Tim’s attitude with the sport. Tim, you rock dude.

  • WyseGuys – Curt Wyse

The Weasel. Absolutely the Wiesel. Every time I have met him on the trail or at an event, he has been an incredible ambassador to the sport. He encourages new comers and challenges veterans. There are few like him, and he is definitely my vote.

  • Bored boomer

    My vote for The Weasel

  • David

I agree with what Britney said, (Yes) Weasel everyone else is voting for him so I will too.

  • Britney

    Yes Weasel

  • Tikibirds

Our vote is for The Weasel. Having recently moved to Cedar Rapids, Tim was one of the first to introduce us to the area and several of the local cachers here, something most appreciated when we knew no-one. Tim’s hides all have a “quality” element to them that make it always worthwhile to find. He recently undertook a technical adventure of sorts, and created his first Wherigo. While some would accept a simple cartridge, Tim insisted on making something that would be both fun, and appreciated by the finders. Tim is otherwise a pretty quiet and humble guy, and is usually one to shy away from the spotlight. His zeal and passion for Geocaching however, always shines through! If you’re fortunate enough to join on his caching adventures, or attend any of the many Geocaching classes he’s given, you can catch sight of the fire in his eyes for yourself. As a reviewer, we wholeheartedly appreciate the hard work he puts into maintaining his hides, as I’m sure the caching community does too! You’ll be hard pressed to find a Weasel hide in bad shape, which is also saying a lot as he has hidden many caches! Thanks can’t even begin to cover all that he’s done for our spot. “The Weasel” is the real deal!

  • emmad

You have to give credit to all that the Weasel does for the sport

  • Wolverine96

  • Megan

    I vote for The Weasel

  • BGT

I vote for the Weasel! He’s also adding innovative touches to his geocaching hides, and he does excellent cache maintenance!

  • alandb

My vote is for the Weasel. I have met Tim on the trail and found several of his hides, many of which are among my favorites. He is a great representative for the best in the geocaching community.

  • 12cache

Cacher of the month should be more about what you give back to geocaching, rather than the caches you found or even the number of caches placed. My vote is for The Weasel who makes his goal to bring new people into the hobby and offer continual support to all.

  • Dan

    Weasel

  • tbruihler

I would vote for The Weasel 10 times if I could! Go Tim!

  • Jeff Reid

The Weasel! I have really enjoyed doing all of the quality caches of his that I have found. The puzzle caches are first rate, and the hides themselves are always in interesting spots. The Weasel is always willing to help out a fellow cacher, and devotes countless hours to make the hobby better for others. The CVNT series that he and supergoober put out still ranks as my favorite power trail.

  • sunluver

The Weasel. He’s always willing to help out, and spends countless hours to make the hobby more enjoyable for others. His puzzle caches are top notch, original, challenging, and great placement. The CVNT series that he did with supergoober is my favorite power trail.

  • Detacatedmom

    I vote for weasel

  • jollywally

What an awesome lineup of candidates for GOTM. However, my vote has to go for The Weasel. Not only has he been an active cacher for years, but he also gives back to the sport with his many hides that serve as examples for others. Based on reputation, his name has become somewhat of an adjective for certain types of geocache hides. When you hear a cache described as Weasel-like, you know you can expect a good physical challenge. His nature-based educational series was also extremely well-done. In addition, he also demonstrates that maintaining his caches is a high priority, so you can count on a good quality find whenever you look for one by him. The Weasel has also been actively involved in the Iowa Geocaching Organization for years, helping to shape the sport in this region. There is no doubt that The Weasel is well-deserving of the GOTM recognition.

I vote for the Weasel. As an educator and a geocacher I love how many 101,201, and 301s are available because of him. He is definately an asset to the geocaching community.

  • Squishypets

Gotta go with The Raven, he is an amazing person, and creates Awesome caches.

  • Rachel DeBoer

Weasel gets my vote. I have really enjoyed looking for his caches and if you ever have a problem or you did not come up with a find he makes sure to check it out as soon as he is able.

  • cmccarthy6

My vote goes to the Weasel. He is what Geocaching is all about!

My vote is for The Weasel. His caches are one of the reasons I make the 90 mile drive to hunt them

  • silcox_family

  • Sweetcamper

Three awsome Geocachers, but my vote goes to The Raven.

  • fcyoung (Fred)

My vote is for “The Weasel”. He is an avid geocacher in eastern Iowa and has made a significant contribution to the hobby in this area. His “Outdoor Lesson” series of puzzle caches are put together well and you, indeed, get a lesson about the outdoors. I have enjoyed many of his caches that are placed along the bike trails.

  • fcyoung

I vote for “The Weasel”. He is an avid geocacher that has made a significant contribution to the hobby. I particularly like his “Outdoor Lesson” series of puzzle caches that are informative and fun. I’ve enjoyed many of his caches placed along the bicycle trails in Linn County.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nick.burgart Nick Burgart

I’m voting for The Weasel. I’ve really enjoyed all the unique and inventive caches that he’s set up. He’s very encouraging to the newbies and readily answers questions.

  • yoyoteacher

I’ve heard many great things about The Weasel and hope he gets it :)

  • Kevin Meyers

I’m voting for “The Weasel”. I need to preface my reasoning with the fact that I’m not a geocacher. I’m just a technology manager who’s exposure to the sport has been very limited. However, I’ve recently spent some vacation time with the Weasel, and during this time, he introduced geocaching to my son. His passion for the activity, and dedication to not just the “fun” associated with it, but also the education and learning opportunities it provides has truly impressed me. For these reasons alone, I believe he should easily win the award.

  • http://www.facebook.com/phil.beer.144 Phil Beer

I believe there is a minor Glitch in the system to explain the “vote down”. If I click on “vote up” twice, the vote goes up and then down. I know none of the nominees would get a intentional “vote down”.

  • Tara

    I vote for The Weasel!

  • VixVixen

My vote is for the Raven.

  • pnbtravelers

The Weasel. He is the heart of the midwest when you are talking about the Geocaching World. Happy Caching. The pnbtravelers crew from Florida and originally from Fairbank, Iowa.
