January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

They put on events, they readily share geocaching tricks and tips and they challenge new and seasoned geocachers with their hides. They are the January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees.

Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as the Featured Geocacher of the Month for January.

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these geocachers you feel should be awarded the Featured Geocacher of the Month title.

In December, Wayne, a.k.a. Moneydork was recognized for establishing himself as one of Australasian’s most prolific geocachers. His efforts to support the community as a Geocaching volunteer reviewer and good Samaritan have not gone unnoticed. He even managed to organize New Zealand’s very first Mega-Event from 3500 km (2175 miles) away. According to fellow geocachers, Moneydork’s hides and events are legendary Down Under and he never hesitates to give his all to the sport.

Here are your nominees for the January Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Mr Bluesky writes, “On November 29th, Don, [a.k.a. Kirret] will have found a geocache every single day of the year, since November 2011.  He has done this in three different countries and on two continents. This year alone he has found over 1,700 geocaches, including a grand haul of 100 on March the 27th. Don worked in Scotland in 2010 and 2011 and I got to meet him through geocaching. We immediately became firm friends. I had the pleasure of geocaching with him in Canada in July 2012 and then again on August 18th in Scotland. Don is very enthusiastic about geocaching and has, just by meeting people while out geocaching, gotten many involved in this hobby by informing them of what he was doing and how enjoyable it is. He mostly geocaches with his wife and son and is one of Guildford, England’s most prolific geocachers. He is out in all weather conditions with a smile on his face and a GPS in hand. I think his achievements this year is a remarkable feat.”

 

The Raven

ttcm4geo writes, “If you visit Prescott, Arizona as we were one weekend, you will note something curious. Many of the geocaches you visit will have a note stating that ‘while you are in Prescott, you must find a geocache called Raven’s Labyrynth.’ So many geocacher said this that we finally decided to pursue it. The geocache itself is amazing, which I am sure took weeks to construct. Then we found out that the geocache owner has many similarly thought-out geocaches in the area. In fact, Prescott is known as ‘Ravenland.’ But, even more amazing is that if you email Dan, a.k.a. The Raven with a question, he promptly replies and tells you to call him. So we called him and got some assistance. He was very nice, and you can tell that his only goal is to help people enjoy geocaching. His geocaches are creative, well thought out and so much fun. He does all this work for people many of whom he will never meet. Therefore, I think he deserves this recognition.”

 

 

 

The Weasel

SuperGoober writes, “Tim, a.k.a. The Weasel is what geocaching is all about. He gives back so much more than he takes. He hosted the very first CITO in the Midwest: EIGA 2004 CEDAR RAPIDS CITO EVENT. He is an active member and Board Director for the Iowa Geocacher Organization and a volunteer for the Linn County Conservation. Tim has conducted and assisted in over 50 geocaching 101, 201 and 301 classes and workshops throughout the State of Iowa and abroad. His knowledge of the wilderness extends well beyond that of an average geocacher. He uses his extensive knowledge of the outdoors to help other geocachers by placing some very creative and educational geocaches. The Weasel has an impeccable sense as to what geocaching is all about. He realizes that cache maintenance is very necessary to ensure that geocaching is fun and that the geocache is there. He is just unstoppable.”

Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive an exclusive special edition featured Geocacher of the Month Geocoin, along with a Geocacher of the Month hat, a Geocacher of the Month profile icon and a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com. We will be accepting comments for January’s award through Sunday, January 20th.

Those whose nominees were not recognized here are encouraged to submit their nominations again next month. If you know an outstanding geocacher you would like to nominate to be a featured Geocacher of the Month, send an email to geocacherofthemonth@groundspeak.com and include the following information:

  • Your name, the name of your nominee, their username
  • A picture of the nominee
  • Description (200 or more words) explaining why he or she deserves to be the Geocacher of the Month

Please inform your nominee that you’ve submitted them for the award.

Nominations for the February Geocacher of the Month must be received by Friday, February 8th. 

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

  2. The “Raven” is great. He helps with our geo-caching. He is very knowledgeable. Dan is very friendly and helps with our out of town geo-cachers. Here at the library, we have geo-cachers come from CO. CA. and other parts of AZ. Our geo-caching adventure is here at the Prescott Valley Public Library in Prescott Valley, AZ. I am our library’s cataloger and reference librarian. I also help catalog the items they have to find. I get a big kick out of how these people are very coy when geo-caching. You see, they have to fine the reference book that will help them. They are so cute when asking where the reference book, etc. as some have not set foot in a library for awhile, so in a way being in a library adds more to geo-caching. I am glad Dan wanted to use our library for our northern AZ geo-caching. Once they fine the clues they are on their way…We even had a geocaching class with Dan “The Raven” as our guide, so that we as librarians and others that attended are now in the “know” of geo-caching. Dan our “Raven” is tops in our “book” when it comes to geo-caching. He is our 21st century Indiana Jones.

    He has a pleasant voice and is a great couch when helping geo-gachers. He is so thrilled that we are, and others from all over the country want to participate. He makes us want to do it again and again. Geo-caching through the “Raven” will continue throughout all eternity. I would like my daughter to continue with geo-caching and make it a family activity, just like those that come to the library and do ours with their families.

  3. I definitely have to take time to place a vote for The Weasel! I heard my parents speak over and over again about caches put out by The Weasel, so I had to see for myself what was so good about them. On a few visits to see my parents we headed out to get a little caching in. Inevitably nearly every cache that I liked turned out to be placed by The Weasel. His caches are fun, unique, well placed, and well maintained. You can’t help but get excited about geocaching when you are working on one of his caches! And to know how much he cares about his community, the environment, and the awareness and promotion of geocaching through friendships and education, it would be hard NOT to vote for The Weasel. Congrats on the nomination and good luck! You deserve it!

  5. I am voting for The Weasel. I have talked with time at events and using e mail. He is always a help full phone call away if needed. Tim places some great caches that will make you put your thinking cap on, and let me tell you that if you post a DNF or say one if his caches has a wet log or something like that, Tim will have it replaced,fixed or what ever needs to be done with in 48 hours. Love your caches Tim!! Good luck to all three!!

  8. The Raven is our choice. If you have a chance to visit Prescott, The Labyrinth is a geo must!

  18. just getting my vote in for the weasel. we were ouy in the nice weather today finding more Weasel caches.

  19. My vote goes for the Weasel. His caches are innovate and a nice challenge. He also encouraged me to put out my first cache and I’ve put out over 15 since those encouraging words just over a year ago. With out that prodding I know I would not have put any geocaches out.

  27. I am respecting what The Weasel and The Raven said earlier which instead of voting for one person, that we push for having multiple winners this month. Hopefully the future posters will follow suit and do the same. Somebody said it perfect earlier when they said that this should not be decided by the amount of Facebook friends you have! I plead to Groundspeak to do the right thing!!! Multiple Winners!!!

  29. I vote for “The Raven.” He spends so much time for others to have fun! His caches are amazing. Especially deserving mention is the “Labyrinth” in Prescott. He has numerous well-thought out caches all over the region.

  31. my name is Megana i am 10 years old and i vote for the raven becouse he takes his own time to do this and thats why i think he should win this very nice reward.

  34. my name is Cameron and i am part of the ttcm4geo geocaching family. i vote for the Raven. i really enjoyed finding the Raven’s cache the labyrinth. it must have taken him months to come up with that cache, it was so interesting. im trying not to give away what it is and still tell how cool it was. i have never seen anything like that cache, after i found it i didnt want to leave. i spent two hours at the cache after i had found it. if i ever come back to prescott i will revisit that cache.

  40. The best idea yet, multiple winners! I’m not sure what Groundspeak will do, but the fact the top 2 “vote” getters are pushing so hard for multiple winners, that is what Geocaching is all about!! Making new friendships and being one big Geocaching family and supporting each other instead of saying “which cacher is better or more deserving”. I also encourage everybody to do the same!

  46. My vote is for ‘The Raven’. Rarely do we visit a cache more than once, and very rarely when it is hours away from our home, but we have visited his caches 3 and 4 times a piece to enjoy watching our friends and family enjoy them. They are thoughtful, creative, and fun. And ‘The Raven’ himself is an exemplary cache owner, being very responsive and kind when we emailed with accessibility questions after the recent fires. He saved us from driving for hours when forest fires had made some caches inaccessible. The combination of great caches and a great cache owner is what motivated us to come on line and vote. Win or lose, Thanks, Raven!

  47. Please people, lets quit voting for one person or another!!! We are not going to get multiple winners unless we post and try to convince Groundspeak to do so!!! My vote is multiple winners!

  48. We pick the Raven! We’ve cached at many of his “experiences” and always had a great time. Love the way he works with the town of Prescott and makes every new cache a new surprise. So much thought and planning goes into them. Finally had a chance to meet him in person after only communicating through email, and listening in to a podcast, or speaking to others who knew him, and we were just as impressed with the real life human behind the creations. Always looking forward to the next Ravenland adventure.

  50. The Raven. Anyone who answers your email questions right away gets my vote. Can hardly wait to go that way in the next few weeks to find at least one of his caches.
