January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

They put on events, they readily share geocaching tricks and tips and they challenge new and seasoned geocachers with their hides. They are the January Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees.

December 2012 Featured Geocacher of the Month, Moneydork

Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as the Featured Geocacher of the Month for January.

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these geocachers you feel should be awarded the Featured Geocacher of the Month title.

In December, Wayne, a.k.a. Moneydork was recognized for establishing himself as one of Australasian’s most prolific geocachers. His efforts to support the community as a Geocaching volunteer reviewer and good Samaritan have not gone unnoticed. He even managed to organize New Zealand’s very first Mega-Event from 3500 km (2175 miles) away. According to fellow geocachers, Moneydork’s hides and events are legendary Down Under and he never hesitates to give his all to the sport.

Here are your nominees for the January Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Kirret

Kirret

Mr Bluesky writes, “On November 29th, Don, [a.k.a. Kirret] will have found a geocache every single day of the year, since November 2011.  He has done this in three different countries and on two continents. This year alone he has found over 1,700 geocaches, including a grand haul of 100 on March the 27th. Don worked in Scotland in 2010 and 2011 and I got to meet him through geocaching. We immediately became firm friends. I had the pleasure of geocaching with him in Canada in July 2012 and then again on August 18th in Scotland. Don is very enthusiastic about geocaching and has, just by meeting people while out geocaching, gotten many involved in this hobby by informing them of what he was doing and how enjoyable it is. He mostly geocaches with his wife and son and is one of Guildford, England’s most prolific geocachers. He is out in all weather conditions with a smile on his face and a GPS in hand. I think his achievements this year is a remarkable feat.”

The Raven

The Raven

ttcm4geo writes, “If you visit Prescott, Arizona as we were one weekend, you will note something curious. Many of the geocaches you visit will have a note stating that ‘while you are in Prescott, you must find a geocache called Raven’s Labyrynth.’ So many geocacher said this that we finally decided to pursue it. The geocache itself is amazing, which I am sure took weeks to construct. Then we found out that the geocache owner has many similarly thought-out geocaches in the area. In fact, Prescott is known as ‘Ravenland.’ But, even more amazing is that if you email Dan, a.k.a. The Raven with a question, he promptly replies and tells you to call him. So we called him and got some assistance. He was very nice, and you can tell that his only goal is to help people enjoy geocaching. His geocaches are creative, well thought out and so much fun. He does all this work for people many of whom he will never meet. Therefore, I think he deserves this recognition.”

The Weasel

The Weasel

SuperGoober writes, “Tim, a.k.a. The Weasel is what geocaching is all about. He gives back so much more than he takes. He hosted the very first CITO in the Midwest: EIGA 2004 CEDAR RAPIDS CITO EVENT. He is an active member and Board Director for the Iowa Geocacher Organization and a volunteer for the Linn County Conservation. Tim has conducted and assisted in over 50 geocaching 101, 201 and 301 classes and workshops throughout the State of Iowa and abroad. His knowledge of the wilderness extends well beyond that of an average geocacher. He uses his extensive knowledge of the outdoors to help other geocachers by placing some very creative and educational geocaches. The Weasel has an impeccable sense as to what geocaching is all about. He realizes that cache maintenance is very necessary to ensure that geocaching is fun and that the geocache is there. He is just unstoppable.”

Nominations for the February Geocacher of the Month must be received by Friday, February 8th.

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

  1. I would like to cast my vote for The Weasel. On top of being a great guy he places some of the most creative caches i have seen.

  2. The Raven, has the most amazing and creative caches on earth. If you come to visit Arizona, make it a point to experience at least one of the Raven’s cache, that is all it takes to and you will become addicted. How many cache can you honestly say you return to time and time again, just because it is so fun? Besides Dan is a great guy who is more then happy to help if you have a question or problem with one of his caches. The enjoyment for him is just seeing how much fun people have with his cache which are truly a work of art. So my vote is for the Raven 100%!

  3. I think a great cacher that deserves credit is The Weasel. He, being a very active member in the geocaching community has helped shape Iowa geocaching for what it is today and promotes the love of the game with his great cache maintenance skills and the cacher who hosted the FIRST CITO EVENT IN IOWA!!! Without The Weasel, the love of the game wouldnt be the same. Good Luck Weasel!! -BearsFan11

  4. I vote for The Raven. Not only are his caches simply amazing, he is one of the nicest people I know. Dan isn’t just good for geocaching, he is one of its top ambassaders. Go Dan!

  5. We would like to vote for The Weasel! Great geocacher. He’s puts a lot of time and effort into geocaching and is always helpful. He has a lot of fun hides and he also writes fun thought out logs on the caches he finds.

  6. I vote Weasel. First off, all of the candidates are well deserving. The fact that the most comments that any other month was 339, and this month is pushing 500! I am voting for The Weasel for his constant contributions in his caching community. With all his caches and maintenance that he does, he still has time to teach classes and is a top contributor on the IGO website. The Weasel is the definition of a well rounded cacher.

  7. The Weasel hands down! Even though I haven’t done the caches yet, The Weasel has a couple of 100% favorited caches that require you to use a kayak to get to them. I contacted the Weasel last year to see if that was the only way to get to them. This was the only way to do them w/o going on private property. Not having a kayak, this was not going to happen, BUT the Weasel offered to let me borrow his kayak to do them!! Things got busy last year and couldn’t take him up on his offer, but this year I will!!! I think this shows how generous The Weasel is and cares about giving back and helping his fellow cachers.

  12. Congrats Weasel! A well deserved vote for a great guy, great cacher, and true ambassador of the sport! Keep up the good work , we appreciate all you do!

  13. The Raven ~ look what he has done in just 3 years of geocaching in the Prescott area. What is not to love about his caches and him. He out does all he does.

  14. The Raven!!!!! Just look at what others say on his FB page- They would rather go to Ravenland than Disneyland; Dan introduced them to Santa; they traveled across the country just to do Raven caches. I think it is great that The Weasel educates people and creates new cachers, but The Raven does that and lots more. His caches are total adventures that one will remember for a lifetime, he brings lots of tourists (cachers-to-be) to the area, he creates works of art and feats of engineering. AND on top of all that, he is very modest and does this all, not for himself, but for others. AND he does it all with the approval and blessings of the city and businesses within the Prescott area. He should be GEOCACHER of the YEAR! Or better, CENTURY!

  15. I have throw my vote out for The Weasel. He is a pioneer of Iowa geocaching! To be a founding member of the Eastern IowaGeocachers Association is very cool. I just listened to your podcast with Cacheamanics and it was very interesting to hear what you had to say! To also have a cache placing style named after shows how much people love your caches and respect you!
I can’t wait to talk to you at a event or one of your classes to see what you have planned next. I know your personally responsible for turning a LOT of people onto Geocaching, and to me that is what a Geocacher of the month is all about. You TOTALLY deserve to win!

  16. The Weasel gets my vote for his constant genorosity, whether it is placing all the fabulous caches you do, conducting numerous classes, or taking the time to help newbies like mean not only learn the ropes, but do it correctly!

  17. I’m voting for the Raven, both the Raven and Weasel are great cachers, I wish Groundspeak would give each of them a month as Geocacher of the month. Both are well deserved.

  18. I gotta go with The Weasel. All nominees are doing it right, but the all around things that the Weasel does made him stand out a little bit more. I DO agree that this would be a great month to have 2 winners!! How about we all push for co-winners this month instead of just one!! The amount of comments justifies that!

  19. Weasel gets a huge YES from me!! You do everything the way a model Geocacher SHOULD be doing it. from you being a huge proponent for proper cache maintenance, to your close work with the Linn County Conservation and other park groups. A HUGE asset to Iowa caching! And you still find time to put out outstanding caches and teach classes. A well deserved recognition for all that you do Weasel!

  20. The Weasel clearly has left his mark in Linn County, both for geocaching and for his work in spreading the joy of the outdoors.

  21. For his boundless enthusiasm, advocacy of geocaching to those unaware of it and encouragement to new cachers, Kirret gets my vote.

  22. Add another vote for The Weasel. He has provided many hours teaching people about geocaching from our nature center, Wickiup Hill Learning Center. His caches give people an opportunity to explore Linn County Conservation parks in a new way.

  23. Add a vote for The Weasel, he has found several of my caches and always written excellent logs, not to mention all the things he does across th river in Iowa!

  24. I am going to vote for the person who has taught me bunch about geocaches and even has tribute caches placed after him, The Weasel.

    GC4371A
    GC2HH81
    GC2HH7F
    GC2HY67
These are just a few caches that were placed in tribute to the man contributions that The Weasel has made.

  25. I vote for The Weasel! It is more than just hiding and finding (which he does both very well), it is teaching others how by being a good example and answering questions and giving good advice.
