International Geocaching Day – August 18

Geocachers unite on August 18 to celebrate International Geocaching Day. It’s a day devoted enjoying what you love – geocaching. There’s even a digital prize. Geocachers who log an “Attended” at an Event Cache or a “Found it” for another cache type on International Geocaching Day earn a souvenir for their Geocaching.com profile page. International Geocaching Day is the perfect occasion to hike with family and friends, enjoy the outdoors, and log one, two, or a dozen smileys.

Thousands of adventurers will attend one of more than 100 International Geocaching Day events around the globe. The events range from Event Caches to CITO Events and include Mega-Events in Germany, Hungary, and the United States.

The Mega-Event in the U.S. is the 2012 Geocaching Block Party hosted at Groundspeak HQ in Seattle, Washington. Watch this video to see your invitation from some of Geocaching.com’s most famous (furry) employees.

Check out the Geocaching.com Event Calendar to find an International Geocaching Day event near you. If there’s not an event in your area, there’s still time to plan an Event Cache of your own. Don’t forget to share pictures and stories from your International Geocaching Day event on the official Geocaching.com Facebook page.

Would someone please explain how “Geocachers … can earn a souvenir by logging a “Found it” for
another cache type on International Geocaching Day”?  What is the “another” cache type, and what time zone are we using to calculate the “day”?  Thx

  • Paul

I think by “another”…they mean…”any other type of” cache…good question about the time zone though…not sure about that one…

  • Veronica Zeiler

Time zone usually goes by geocaching hq, which would be in seattle, washington, usa

  • DougDawn

Thx Paul – I’ll give it a try on the day.

  • DougDawn

Thx Veronica – As long as I log a cache during the daytime here in Ontario, I guess it should qualify for the souvenir.

To get the Souvenir when you Log the cache online, put the date as 8/18/2012.  Time zone does NOT MATTER!

“Another cache type” is ANY cache type.  These include Traditional, Virtual, Unknown, Multi, etc…

@The Steaks : Would that mean for Dutch players that they would need to adjust their settings on their profile page to English? I mean that right now our date setting is 18/8/2012.
Would the organiser receive this Souvenir too or would they have to log another cache that they don’t “own” to earn it ?

DougDawn, The Souvenir will be awarded according to your local timezone, as long as you log a “Found it” or an “Attended” on August 18. The format of the date doesn’t matter, just that you got out on August 18th and geocached as part of International Geocaching Day. Thanks for taking part! Can’t wait!

The best to do in the International Geocaching Day would be promote among geocachers all over the world to have their cache listings translated to English. At least a little description and the hint.

NO THANKS…. i’d rather have a souvenir for other countries that i’ve cached in, that you have yet to make a souvenir for.
No excuses please…. just spend a little of that money and do it.

  • bulcacher

Fun stuff! Headed to Ankara with my son for the occasion.

I did some today and still no souvenir :,( I was so excited to finally get my second one and alas it hasn’t happened…

  • kat73

    Hasn’t worked for me :(

  • T300d

For me its the same. No Souvenir at 18.08.12

  • Gremxul

I logged and the minute after received my souvenir… when hitting the enter button after logging it immediately said: Gongratulations, you got yourself a souvenir” So it worked for me as for any other person that attend our event or logged another type of cache. Thanx

  • jukis&prusak

We found 10 geocaches on that day but didn’t get any souvenir. Was it because we logged them 2 days after the fact?

I indeed read somewhere that the log MUST be written on August 18 !

  • jp

Just edited a log that i did on the 18th August and now the souvenir is there!..maybe it had
appeared without the edit though. Anyway, all ok.
