Geocacher of the Month

March’s featured nominees are a great example of those who take geocaching wide and far. Though many other qualified candidates were nominated, Groundspeak Lackeys selected these three daring, helpful, and  inspirational nominees. Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as March’s featured “Geocacher of the Month.”

Magicman65 - February 2012 Geocacher of the Month

Write a comment on this blog post about which of these three geocachers you feel should be the feartured “Geocacher of the Month.” Those whose nominees were not recognized here are encouraged to submit their nominations again next month.

Last month, Magicman65 was chosen as the February Featured Geocacher of the Month. Magicman65 was recognized for his ability to engage the geocaching community with creativity, commitment, and encouragement.

Here are your nominees for the March Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Alexschweigert

Alexschweigert

Nominated by Hmichel777, “Alexschweigert led the Allerhalligen-Cruises on March, 24th on the fastest ship in the Wadden Sea with 280 cachers on board. That’s the 5th event of its kind involving chartered ships on the north sea led by Alex and his team. Alex shares his love for geocaching and the sea with others by inviting them to experience a geocaching adventure like no other. All events are recorded and can be found in Alex’s blog.”

Lisdowney

Lisdowney

Nominated by Treknschmidt, “We met Lisdowney aka Arnie and Gerry when we were working on completing a tough challenge cache. They were always willing to share their own experiences with us and to provide us with words of encouragement along the way. It’s not unusual to find one of them up a tree, in a cave, or canoeing to one of Ontario’s remote locations to log a lonely cache. Not only are these two always willing to offer a helping hand but they are truly inspirational to everyone of any age.”

Gsix5666

Gsix5666

Nominated by BSW2010, “Glenn is one of the best cachers in our area and contributes a lot to the geocaching community. He hosts an event every year on New Year’s Day. This proud Silver Level EarthCashe Master puts a lot of thought and effort into every cache he hides. Glenn keeps us plenty busy and is willing to help with any of his hides.”

Comment below to tell us who you think should be the featured March “Geocacher of the Month.” A panel of Lackeys will use your comments to help decide which geocacher is awarded the honor. Each featured “Geocacher of the Month” will receive an exclusive special edition featured ”Geocacher of the Month” Geocoin along with a Geocacher of the Month hat and a certificate acknowledging their contributions signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com. We will be accepting comments for March’s award through Friday, April 20th.

If you know an outstanding geocacher you would like to nominate to be a Featured Geocacher of the Month, send an email to geocacherofthemonth@groundspeak.com.

Looking over the list, I recognize a couple of the names this month. Lisdwoney and Gsix5666. I “know” lisdowney from my experiences of searching for Wherigos in Ontario a few years back and also that they have sought out a few of mine here in Michigan. However I KNOW Gsix5666 more in person as I have had the opportunity to meet Glen in person, and even cache with him while in his area.

When you think of cache hiders in Michigan, usually the first name that comes up is Glenn! Every time I see Glenn he has hidden an additional 100 caches since the last time I talked to him. This is a guy who believes in keeping the geocaching landscape fresh and challenging. He puts out a variety of caches, a variety of sizes and a variety of areas. I wish I could make it over to Glenn’s side of the state more often as I love the puzzles he puts out and with as often as he refreshesthe area, the challenge would not be the puzzles, it would just be getting them all :) And being I love puzzles, that would be a challenge I would take on. Same can be said for the multi-caches he puts out. Of course there are also the many traditional caches he puts out too.

Of course, one of these year’s I will make good on my promise to get to Glenn’s NEW YEAR’S DAY event. When you think of New Year’s Day in Michigan, this is THE event that gets the most attention. I remember when this event used to just have 20 or 30 caches (or maybe more) associated to it, but now I think he has “rallied the troops” and it now can be associated to well over 200 caches placed to go with this event. So if you have nothing going on the first day of the year, head to Michigan. Some year’s we don’t even have snow to deal with :)

Despite living over 150 miles from Glen, he is tops on my list of “finds by cache hider”, and it might be a while before anyone else takes that spot.

Congratulations to Glen on 970 cache placements to date and thanks for placing them for so many people to find. I feel honored to have found 139 of these to date.

Meine Stimme für Alexschweigert. Super tolles Event.

    Lisdowney has my vote!

Gerry and Arnie (Lisdowney) are two of the most gracious, caring, helpful, outgoing and understanding people I’ve ever met.  They are always there if you need them and, to me, represent the best of the best when it comes to caching and personalities in general. They are people I look up to, aspire to be more like and count myself lucky to have gotten to know.  And don’t get me started about caching achievements as I can only dream of adventure caching like they do on a regular basis.

When I saw that they were nominated it didn’t surprise me one bit. ;)

  • Gillian Olver

Lisdowney! When I first met these folks they had never owned rubber boots nor slept outside. They quickly progressed to chest waders then onto canoe tripping. There are some fabulous puzzle series out there created in part or in full by this team and if you are into puzzle solving they are a pair you would love to team up with. In the feild, all hour computer collaboration, behind the scenes at events, wherever you meet them, Arnie and Gerry are sure to have a smile and a story on hand to make you feel welcome.

Lisdowney are two of the best role models anyone can have. They are truly great ambassadors for the game of Geocaching.

As someone who has literally been pulled out of the mud by them, my vote has to go to Lisdowney!  When I needed help, they were a phone call away, they dropped everything to come to my aid.  There are lots of great cachers out there, but few compare to Arnie and Gerry!

  • Geogranny

Lisdowney, hands downey.    Fabulous people that embody a true sense of adventure and match it with their efforts at helping others.

  • Kata_Tjuta

Got to be Lisdowney, they have helped me out a number of times and seem to get out to every event in the area and beyond.

  • hidnseek

    Lisdowney :)

A couple I look forward to seeing every year at a MEGA event.  I am greeted at the event with their smiles and enthusiasm.  The stories of their adventures they have been on are a joy to hear.  The way they treat every cacher they meet as if they are long lost friends, is fun to see.  After a long day at the event they still keep smiling through dinner when others look like they just want a bed.

I know if I was in a situation with them around, they would be the ones to help me out and then take me on a geocaching adventure I would never forget :)

Lisdowney often helps us with medical issues and knowledgeable advice from his pre-retirement days, and is always more then willing to receive a phone call asking for advice.  He always has a story to tell, and enthusiasm that could take down a brick wall.  He is a much better cacher then all of us, but if you tell him this you will get a long list of reasons why he is not.  Any compliment you try and give them gets turned right back around on you.  Thank you Lisdowney!

  • Allegromouse

    Lisdowney!
    Nicest. People.Ever.

I got to know them through the Central Ontario Geocachers Pub nights/days/breakfasts/brunches/and bbqs.
Super friendly and helpful.  They definitely have my vote!

  • Canadianzombie

I can’t think of a better nominee than Lisdowney. We met when he did my Matrix Challenge cache and we’ve been friends ever since. He’s always helpful to other cachers and is very friendly. He travels all over and just has a passion for the game that most couldn’t even fathom. He and Gerry have my vote 100 times over.
    Cheers

    Another vote for Lisdowney!

  • TochiHunt

I cannot think of many better geocaching role models than Lisdowney. You hear of their great accomplishments and aptitude for challenging caches, but not until you meet them, do you realize their greatest strength lies in their humbleness and community spirit.  The perfect ambassador to the sport!

  • wayne roberts (guardian14)

Lisdowney! We haven’t been caching in a while but when we do find the time to get out to the events; they are one of the firsts to come and ask where have we been. They are some of the nicest cachers I know. Mrs. INCO

Please, please, please….pay attention!   Gsix5666 is one of those people who not only challenge and amuse, but he is also one of the most stand up people I know.  He has put out hundreds of amazing and interesting caches.  The cache pages are well thought out and are both challenging and fun.  He has had series of many kinds, including Presidents, the wives of the Presidents, puzzles to boggle and fascinate, funny stories and great challenges.  Long hikes and short park and grabs…and everything in between.  He hosts a New Years event that brings dozens of us out at the crack of dawn (ok…that’s 8am to some of you, but dawn to me), and he puts together a list of a multitude of brand new caches for all of us to play with, spreading us over many miles so that everyone has a chance to grab a New Years FTF, and encourages us all to go and have fun with it…complete with a handout full of opportunities.
Once when I was struggling with a certain cache, he and several others of us gave it a good hour of work…and when it looked like perhaps this was not on land but in water…he sacrificed himself to leap in for all of us on dry land.  (We did cheer for him).  We did not find it, but we did nearly fall in laughing.  And not one complaint when we walked back to the cars…with him dripping wet in the cold air.  I was shivering watching him.
    He’s that kind of guy.
He deserves a win like this and I know that many would agree.
    Please consider Gsix5666.
I like him and I know that you would too….

  • Liteoncache

GSIX5666!!!  He is the caching Mega-hider that bring cachers from all over the country to SE MI to find his caches!!  He is one of the nicest, most creative, and helpful cachers I know.  He has also been recently nominated to be the Regional Vice President of the SE Chapter of the Michigan Geocaching Organization.  He is most deserving of this honorary distinction of Geocacher of the Month!!

  • Matt Lockett ~ FanglyFish

    Lisdowney!

I met Arnie and Gerry at a caching event in roughly my second month of caching. They made the time to talk to me and make me feel at home. I subsequently was in contact with Arnie over many puzzles and caches. This paved the way to what remains to be my favorite day of caching to date when we drove north to Tomogamy Ontario to do a series of older 5/5 caches. I must admit I did not know Arnie that well when we left to drive up north but he was as good as an old friend by the time we got home.:-) he turned 8+ hours of driving into an amazing experience where we swapped stories and he gave me the history of caching. I still turn to Arnie for advice on a regular basis. Both Arnie and Gerry are willi to lend a hand whenever possible. I was extatic to see a nomination for Lisdowney. It is very well deserved and they most defiantly have my vote.

Lisdowney!  Having met and cached with Arnie, and Gerry,  and having them at our events is spectacular.  Arnie is always ready to offer any advice and help he can.
