Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

Geocacher of the Month Geocoin

Groundspeak needs your help acknowledging a geocacher each month that stands out by inspiring other geocachers with their innovation, creative hides and/or logs, respect for the environment, and helpfulness. More than a hundred geocachers submitted outstanding nominees from around the world.

The Geocacher of the Month celebrates geocachers for their contributions.  A panel of Lackeys had the difficult task of selecting four of the most outstanding nominees. You can help name one of these nominees the “Geocacher of the Month.”

Each geocacher you see below displays extraordinary geocaching qualities including generosity and  inventiveness. Write a comment on this blog post about which of these three geocachers you’d like to see as the first “Geocacher of the Month.”  All those not awarded or nominated are encouraged to submit nominations again next month.

Read the testimonials below and leave a comment with your suggestion. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

haksu10

(Member since 2006)

haksu10

Nominated by ZeroOne: “When I read about your Geocacher of the Month project, I naturally started thinking who would be the most suitable Finnish cacher for the nomination. It took me a while because the person is so humble, but when it came to me it was obvious: username haksu10.

Haksu10 is extremely devoted to the Finnish geocaching community — I dare to say there’s no one more devoted than him. He has single-handedly created and is constantly developing the geocache.fi site, used by most Finnish geocachers daily.

I don’t know when, but in the middle of maintaining the site haksu10 also seems to find the time to occasionally go geocaching. Last summer it almost cost him his life, though. He was bitten by a poisonous snake and was hospitalized. Luckily he recovered in a few days and was back developing the site. Haksu has already found almost 2000 caches and owns almost a hundred caches. The most special of his caches is probably GC16QCH Haksulandia.. What makes it special, though, is that it is located at haksu10′s yard. According to the description, the cache is equipped with an electric outlet in case you need to charge anything. Call before you arrive (or just ring the doorbell) and haksu10 will make you some coffee.”

Dale & Barb

(Members since 2006)

Dale n Barb

Nominated by Joshism: “I am nominating  ‘Dale n Barb.’ Dale and Barbara have been very active in geocaching for several years.  They have organized or assisted in numerous events with both their Space Coast Geocaching Association and the larger Florida Geocaching Association.  I live more than hour’s drive away, but still attend their events; I know many more who drive even farther.  They have worked with parks and the geocaching community, including numerous CITO events.  They are the owners of “A Cool Cache” (GC15RQB): the most Favorited non-Virtual in the state of Florida. They encourage others to “Take Pride In Your Hide” and live that motto, with thoughtful well-maintained hides that have never disappointed me.  They are a huge asset to the Florida geocaching community in every way possible.”

De broekies

(Member since 2006)

De broekies

Nominated by kdv, Marcel en Micha (and two others).

kdv writes, “I would like to nominate “De broekies.”  They are spending most of their spare time helping the Dutch (and international) geocaching community enjoy their geocaching experiences even more. They run a successful geocaching website (www.globalcaching.eu) and offer a lot of functionality and fun to all its users and guests.

They often give away Geocoins and other stuff to visitors. Plus they often help out other websites too, hosting items that require special technical knowledge, for instance to run a Geocoin race. And I have never even met him in person!  Robert is just a great person, and I can honestly not think of anyone more deserving of this title. Actually, Geocacher of the Decade would be even more appropriate!

Marcel en Micha writes,”With this email I would like to nominate Robert of the Broekies for Geocacher of the Month. The reason I would like to nominate him is for his outstanding commitment to the Dutch geocaching community.  I think he is a good example of how to make the geocaching community a better place. Every country in the world should have a ‘Robert’.”

Geocoin front and back

A panel of Lackeys will use your comments to help decide the Geocacher of the Month award on August 20, 2011 at the Geocaching Block Party in Seattle, Washington, USA. Each Geocacher of the Month will receive an exclusive special edition ”Geocacher of the Month” Geocoin along with a Geocacher of the Month hat and certificate acknowledging their contributions signed by the founders of Geocaching.com: Jeremy Irish, Bryan Roth and Elias Alvord.

If you know an outstanding geocacher who should be the Geocachers of the Month, send an email to geocacherofthemonth@groundspeak.com.

Every nomination must meet the following requirements. Please include your name, the name of your nominee, their username, at least one picture of the nominee and description (in 500 or fewer words) explaining why he or she deserves to be the Geocacher of the Month. Please inform your nominee that you’ve submitted them for the award. Nominations for the September Geocacher of the Month must be received by September 3rd.

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

I vote haksu10 too. He made really awesome website for us. Thank you haksu10.

  • matsis

My vote goes Haksu10. I really admire him for his own caches – many of them belong to my top list. He has set the bar high in designing and implementing caches – it is an exprience to seek for his caches.

  • Linkosuo

I’m sure all of the nominees would be deserving but it’s hard to imagine anyone more dedicated to geocaching than haksu10. He has made a huge impact on the whole Finnish geocaching community with his site. On top of that he’s able to build very creative and fun caches.
So my vote goes for haksu10.

    My vote goes to Haksu10!

  • Gambling Machine

Our vote goes to Dale & Barb hands down! Steph and I are new to the geocaching community but have already felt the impact of these two. They have such unique caches as well as having great attention to detail. They are also admired and respected by other cachers here in Florida far and wide. Thank you both for your impact and inspiration.

Dale and Barb get my vote. Besides being great event hosts, they make an effort to attend all the events in the Space Coast/Orlando area, and will go back to their geocaching store to open it up for sales after events, even late at night.

  • MEIT

One more vote for Haksu10 from me!

  • hikerT

My vote is for Dale and Barb.  Met them at one of their events in Florida while on vacation with Dr. House.  Very nice and so welcoming of travelling cachers.  I’ve read what they have done for others and in the geocaching community and I think they really deserve this.

  • RiMaJu

    No doubt, it’s Haksu10.

  • RKAL

I vote for Dale & Barb

  • Briggs78

    vote for haksu10 too

  • WHO DAT LDY

    Dale and barb :)

  • rvinggal

Barb and Dale truly deserve the award.  They are always willing to help out a fellow cacher.  Even on weekends when there store is closed Dale has opened his doors.  My daughter was visiting and we could only come in on a Sunday.  He met us at the store and spent a lot of time talking and helping us out with our caching questions.  They get my vote

  • kari52

My vote also goes to haksu10

  • Fotogravin

I love the site Robert of De Broekies has made. I love the fact that reported bugs are adressed so quickly. He contacts conservationists to cooperate with geocachers who want to have their geocache in that area, to make getting permissions easier for cache-owners and to make more clear to the conservation organizations what caches are published in their area. He makes arrangements with people of groundspeak, garmin, GSAK and so on to have a chat-sessions with dutch people who like to ask questions to these organizations, or who are just interested in such a chat. So I think his nomination is great because of all the inspiring things he does and the things he makes possible for other geocachers.

  • Lemmy

Haksu10. Make no mistake about it.

  • irisisleuk

    Geocacher of the month
is a wrong title for all nominees (sorry, the coins are probably already made…).
Reading the stories I can only conclude that all three should be awarded with a
title like Distinguished Geocacher. They all stand out and definitely not just
this month!  Over 5 million geocachers
means it is impossible to choose just one per month, there are so many geocachers
that deserve to get some extra attention and appreciation for what they do. Last
weekend I met Robert of de Broekies at a geocaching event (not officially
organized, but some people who met in the globalcaching chat decided to meet
each other in real life). I asked him what he thought about his nomination and
he answered that he never expected anything like this, since he doesn’t see
himself as a geocacher of the month. He started talking about how he respects
haksu10, how he was impressed with his work. And I think all three nominees are
like him: not into promoting themselves, even a bit ashamed about being
nominated. What they do isn’t special to themselves, they think it’s regular
behavior since they just love doing what they do for the geocaching community,
with our without ever being nominated.  I
know Robert could use the hat, so please send him one…;) But I vote all three
nominees to become Distinguished Geocachers (of the Month), they all deserve it
and it will make 3 different geocaching countries/communities proud of being the
    first to be awarded.

  • Dale

Very well said.  We were surprised by our nomination and completely overwhelmed by the fact we made it this far.  We have no expectations and are just honored to be recognized for this award.  You have said it so well, we really do not believe we do anything out of the ordinary.  We just love the game and love being around and helping other people learn about geocaching.  It’s what we do..lol.

  • Jenni

    This one is easy, Haksu10

  • Itchyfeet2wander

Itchyfeet2wander votes decidedly for Dale and Barb.  They are such encouragers and spend exorbitant amounts of time and money on providing our Florida geocachers with fun, informative events.  They maintain a wonderful geocaching store that is “on the ground” and online as well.  They see that our spacecoast geocaching association (SCGA) in Florida is kept active and fun.   SCGA members all appreciate the efforts of Dale and Barb……we would love to see them chosen!!!

  • fegan

My vote is for Dale & Barb.  I met them my second weekend geocaching and they are a major reason I stuck with it.  They give back more to this game than anyone I know.  Just attend an event they’re hosting to see what I mean…people regularly travel over 100 miles to attend one of their events, they’re really that good.  Great friendship, great food, great raffles, great activities for everyone!  This game just wouldn’t be the same without folks like them.

  • Zachary Brantley

My vote is for sure Dale and Barb. They put so much in to the geocaching community and are great people to be around.

  • KJKlock

I vote for Dale n Barb. I first met Dale n Barb when I was In Florida for the landing of the Space Shuttle in September 2009 (mission STS-128). They were so friendy and invited me to the local 9-9-9 event cache that occurred while I was in town. Seven space shuttle missions later, I consider them my best geocaching friends (which is saying a lot because I live in Texas). Even now that the Shuttle program has ended, we continue to stay in touch often. They are certainly deserving of this honor.

  • Z3nuw&

My vote goes to ‘De Broekies’ as Robert seems to put all his energy in creating new features for his website, that is well known in the Dutch geocaching community. He developed a lot of tools, online and offline, to make the life of a geocacher easier.
Next to that, he is a very openminded person. I’ve met him a couple of times and he is (together with Hemma, the other half of de Broekies) also very busy trying to let the National Park Owners see what geocaching can do for them!

  • Naviguessers

Dale and Barb will drop everything to help a fellow cacher. They are great friends to everyone. My vote!! Vicki Oneal

  • Casteel

    De Broekies!

  • Imtomcat

6:30 EDT I believe the announcement was made this morning at the block party in Washington State which ended thirty minutes ago. Would someone please post the name of the winner? Thanks

I vote for Ervind, he has made all of his caches fun to find, with some unique names and interesting spots. With 1000 cache hides, all active caches are able to be found, no caches are in poor shape.  He takes maintenance very seriously and has been a mentor to many new cachers. He stays in contact with all is caching friends and is a real inspiration to all of us in Nova Scotia.

  • TheConvent

Our vote goes to Ervind. He has done a lot for geocaching in Nova Scotia with over 1,000 hides, all well maintained and each one unique in its own way. But he also does a lot for geocaching in general, he is an amazing ambassador for geocaching itself. He is more than happy to explain this sport/activity/obsession to muggles (has turned many into cachers!), and is happy to assist both newbies and experienced cachers who are new to the area/visiting. He has a ready laugh, is lot of fun to be with (at events/gatherings/or just out caching) and he has a warm, open heart for friends/neighbors, or anyone (cacher or not) who needs a hand.

  • Parkermountainroad

I vote for Ervind  as he does much for the local caching community and also has just put out his 1000th cache hide …

  • 4Ceasons

I would like to recommend ervind for geocacher of the month.  Ervind has placed 1000 caches for all of us to find and enjoy.  The most remarkable thing about ervind’s caches is that they are all active and well maintained.  If a geocacher posts a DNF log ervind goes out within a few days to ensure that the cache is in place and makes repairs if necessary.  All of his caches are active and in great shape.  He’s also a phenomenal recycler.  Many of his caches use recycled materials to make them more eco-friendly and fun to find.

Additionally he is very creative in naming his caches – making it more fun to try and guess what we will be looking for when we get to the location.   We always have fun finding ervind’s caches and really hope that he is selected for Geocacher of the month.

  • Bobango

My vote goes to Dale & Barb! You guys are the best!

  • horseshoechamp

My vote goes to Dale and Barb, no doubt about it. These two wonderful folks are the kindest and most giving folks that you wouls ever want to meet. They give SO much to the Geocaching world and welcome you like Family any time you visit their Geo store.

I think Dale and Barb are an excelent choice for this award and honor as there are just not two Nicer folks in our game.

Did I mention these are Two GREAT folks!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck Dale and Barb
